I found two of these in a roll, Strange thing all the other coins except for eight had a large die chip on top of Washington's head or under the R in RUSHMORE on the reverse. I was wondering if this normal for this coin?

Thanks for the pic!! I'm not familiar with this one, but I'm sure some of the pros will chime in soon.

Honestly there are a bunch of those DDR out there . So I'm assuming there are some early die state , mid die state , and LDS . Saying that there are also multiple different DDR ' s and multiple dies that make these quarters. Hence why we have so many different variations. We use things like die chip, breaks, gouges to verify which die it came from because for the most part it is like the fingerprint of the die. When you get a roll I find they usually come from about 4 or 5 different dies . I don't know why but I'm assuming those 4 or 5 dies dump into a bin as the press the coin and then get counted and rolled by the machine on the line. Now I'm rambling I hope I answered your question

Here is my thought, I pulled out two WDDR-001 from one roll. In the same roll I found numerous coins with die chips on top of Washington's head or under RUSH in RUSHMORE. The die chips are large and small and in different locations and forms. Why were there so many coins in the same roll with die chips and two double dies all together in the same roll? Something happened to the die that caused it. We have A mystery? Maybe someone can help solve it. Thanks..................Dan

The designs for the States, Territorial and America the Beautiful Quarters are quickly thrown together with no time to tinker and fine tune to create dies that of optimum performance in terms of die life and to eliminate die chips and cracks. In the end, we are getting a lot of chips and cracks on all the issues because of this - some designs more than others. And the Mint is now making more doubled dies then at any other time in its history -- so much for the highly touted single-squeeze process eliminating them -- it just makes more! Ha!

But mostly from the Philly mint. Seems like something is wrong with their hubbing process? Seems like the tilted die issue is at fault there (class 9)

This will help. I couldn't see it either so I looked it up on John Wexler's site:
