Why is 2009-P considered a key date for the clad end of the Roosevelt series, but not it's Denver companion when its mintage numbers are even smaller by almost half?

2009 coins, period, are considered key dates. You have to go back to the 1950s to find coins with a lower mintage.

Okay, so both P & D. Thanks.

I didn't realize there were low mintages for all coin denominations that year.

Keep in mind that yes, there are relatively low mintages of each 2009 coin but they still exist in the many tens of millions of coins.

The two 2015 silver dimes, now THOSE are definitely key in the Roosevelts!

I don't think I would consider the 2009 a key date. It will probably end up like the 1955 (fairly common in uncirculated condition).

The trick with 2009s is that their rarity is entirely artificial. They are rare because people knew they were going to be rare, and are sitting on *boxes* of BU 2009 coins. Almost none made it to circulation, which just creates a feedback loop driving people to hoard worthless coins.

There will come a day when the hoarders hit hard times and have to dump their hoards at face value. 10, 20, 30 years from now, we are going to see 2009s flood into circulation.

OP is talking about business strikes, primarily. If you want to get into that, then start the subject counting proofs and how many 1982 No P's exist...
