Mexican 1 peso - .100 fine, a nice looking large coin ,but it has < $1 silver content
War Nickels 35% silver, < 1$ silver content
1965-70 halves 40% silver, about $ 2.20 silver content.
50% silver - British after 1919, Australian after 1945, some 1967-68 Canadian:
I only want these coins if they are DIRT CHEAP, I would only really want to pay 50% of melt, even then I would not be that enthusiastic. :-|
The Mexico 1968 Olympics 5 peso coin is a cool coin, .72 pure, that is about where I would draw the line. To get 72% Mexican, 80% Canadian, 83% Swiss, 90% US under or near melt is a great feeling. Even 10% over for a nice batch is not bad in today's market.

Melt will go down. Nothing less than 90%. We used to throw the 40's back.

I am reconsidering my views on 40%. I have a friend who works at a bank, and is looking for silver coins for me.

The only coin I have ever sold are 40% silver halves, by the hundreds. Dirty but profitable.

When silver gets to a level I'd like to sell at, I'll probably sell the 35 and 40 percenters from my private stash and put the money towards 90 or 99 percent. I might keep a roll or so each of War Nickels and 40 percent halves for old times sake, but the rest will go.

For me, any coin in the silver stack needs to at least 90%. Numismatic coins can be less.

Personally I think anything less than 40% is to be considered less serious. I say that because .400 silver coins surround me and is what I can find in change.

This.

Although for stacking purposes, I'll go down to 80% as I have several Canadian silver dollars in my stack. And the other exception is 40% Ike dollars; silver dollars are always a good thing in any purity.

I would like to get a nice 10% Peso though, just to say I have one for my collection.

The 10% pesos are neat to own, really affordable and available in Mint State.

I can also recommend the 72% 1968 Olympics 25 pesos, but those may have a premium over silver in higher grades. A circulated one can be had for around melt if not under on occasion. There are also three types for this coin, making it a fun introductory "mini-series" for those interested in Mexican coins.

50% silver - British after 1919, Australian after 1945,

I have purchased these for scrap (or a little less) and sold some that had numismatic value for multiples of scrap. Someday I would like to go to Britain and try to spend some 50% silver.

All the 10% pesos I have owned were purchased out of (nonsilver) junkboxes.

I like to pick up 40% halves at the banks for face, and trade them for bullion. I remember once buying 14 ASEs for $70 face value in 40% halves. I would happily do that again.

Good point X2an. I can respect 40% from change or coin roll hunting, though I would not buy it at a shop.

I'll gather up all the .400 fine and better coinage I can get, but the .100 Mexican pesos to me are not worth it. The .720 pesos are generally available for about 3x or 4x the cost of the .100 pesos, which is a better deal. Nicer looking coin, too.

I don't entirely understand the prejudices against 40% halves and 35% nickels. I can buy and sell them just as easily as 90 percent. Yeah they're not as pure but...why should I care?
