to my post. lol This nickel seems to have a chip on the roof, an indented area under that, a die crack and a gouge. Am I calling that right?

Can anyone tell me why I see indented areas on the left side of the Monticello so often? Also, is what I'm calling a gouge big enough to be a gouge?

I've seen that on Lincoln Memorial Cents also. Not sure what causes it.

I found 14 nickels in a box that had the same indentation in the same spot. In the box were an additional 74 die chips in that location. Based on that, my guess would the die is starting to deteriorate in that location.

I think if it were Die Deterioration it would be raised on the coin. The only semi-plausible explanation I can come up with is maybe Jefferson's hair on the obverse is hogging the planchet. More than likely some other reason though. Thanks for looking.

Nice die crack with a chip. Not sure on the roof, can we see a closer pic of that area? Is your white balance off? Reverse photo seems a bit orange?

My photography skills are a work in progress. It is a small chip hanging off the roof. The larger one is really the one that concerns me. My question is, does it appear to be 4 square mm or larger? If so it is a gouge. I just can't yet envision 4 sq mm. What part of an inch is a millimeter?

4mm is slightly more than 1/8" if that helps.

I found the same Nickel error. It is a Die Crack / Fracture. I haven't researched it or the valueyet but I see controversy here in this post and I am looking under a microscope and clearly it is raised on the coin and not a gouge.
