Heres a 1955S that I found the other night where the I and B in liberty appears to be doubled. None of the other letters seem to have been effected. Any ideas. Mechanical?

It's just my impression that's Strike Doubling. The metal looks sheared a bit and flattened against the coin field. Anyway I'm a novice on these issues, but I'd recommend the Cherrypicker's Guide. They have a great section on die doubling vs. Strike Doubling.

I wonder if CONECA is referring to Master Die Obverse in the reference to the MDO-001. That would make sense why they would mention it. Machine Doubling is all I see on the coin picture above. Several years had the master die doubling which made hubs that were doubled and dies that were doubled. But these are very common on the 1972 P-D-S. Also 1961-P had several that had master die doubling. But this is the first reference to a master die doubled 1955. But somethings are just a given for certain years. I think this mention is just an observation what we always pass up as common of a certain years.
