Perhaps more than a few vendors avoided the market this weekend and will have double offerings this coming Sunday.

I don't want to set anyone off, but I think the gold sensors have gone off again.

But first, today's loot:
My-Sunday-Market-Finds
My-Sunday-Market-Finds
Swedish Token, 15 Öre passenger token for what I think is some old railway company
Possible gold medallion? Commemorating Volkswagen-Transporter 1 million produced (?) (2x1962)
10 Pfennig, Germany 1916-A
1 Daler SM, Sweden 1715 (actually an emergency issue, otherwise it should have been plate money and thus much larger!)

100 Forint, Hungary 1998
1 Dollar, Singapore 1989 & 1995

5 Dollars, Hong Kong 1980
1 Dinar, Tunisia 1990
100 Drachmes, Greece 2000

Now, the piece in particular is this one:
My-Sunday-Market-Finds
My household scale doesn't help too much but it seems to weigh inbetween 3 to 4 grams. It is incredibly thin yet it feels slightly heavy in hand. Turns out it has the exact same size as a LMU 2 Centime-type coin, diameter and thickness.
My-Sunday-Market-Finds
In this case, a good condition Spanish 2 Centimos coin.

Such coins weigh 2 grams. The medallion weights slightly yet notably more. Its ring tone is very low and clear compared to the 2 Centimos. It also has an intense luster and doesn't seem toned at all.
I've found no information on this piece. I've been searching for everything written on it, gold medallion, coin, volkwagen gold medal, medallion on ebay and google and the only match I got was an equally elusive image with no description, just the medallion in question. Anyone think they recognize this piece? Any leads?

Apart from that, I paid 20 kr for the coins & stuffs pictured (apart from the 2 Centimos). It seems one of my favourite coin sellers has left for now, didn't see him last time and not today either. Guess I'll have to keep looking.

Next week is Christmas eve but that's family time, so I won't be going.

I hope it's a second gold

Nice finds this week.

I wonder if that VW token was an employee award for manufacturing or sales....? It might be gold plated. It would be wonderful if it was solid gold!

Either way -- you have some research to do.

Hi X2an,

Good finds you have here!

I would have to agree with Buddy that the "gold" coin you have might be a gold-plated one.

The reason I am saying this is that I found this link that might be of an interest to you:

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/ite...1945-to-1961

It appears that the gold coin would have some kind of notation that it is gold?

Hope your coin is either real gold or gold-plated (preferably, gold one).

I think if I read German correctly that the coin is issued to commemorate the 1 million Volkswagen Transporters being manufactured and achieved on 2nd October 1962. The coin is for Volkswagen AG (Group) headquartered (or at the head office) in Wolfsburg, (formerly West) Germany.

I think it would be a good idea to e-mail Volkswagen AG to see if they have an achivist to help you in identifying this coin or medal?

Fingers crossed for you that this medal is gold!

The thought has crossed my mind that it could be gold plated, but I think its just too heavy for that. Reasonably if it would indeed be plated then typically it's made of copper as the base material, but that's completely ruled out by weight and ring tone which both indicate that the metal is considerably denser.

But maybe I'm getting my hopes up. It does indeed not contain any notation of purity or anything, the edge is plain. I was thinking about taking it to a precious metal shop I've been to before to get it tested and possibly sold for melt. Chemical testing might be the best way to determine what it's actually made of I guess since there does not seem to be any published documentation on these.

Since it isn't a coin I don't have the same obsession over it and I could more easily let it go in any case.

It might actually be a good idea to contact Volkswagen for this. I doubt it would be a third-party issued medallion if it was actually gold, so perhaps they might have more information about this.

I did some research on German forums and have come up with this:

It's indeed a gold (900/1000) medal. Volkswagen did several of these medals during the 1960s.
This medall should have the following specifications:
weigth: 3,5 gram; diameter: 20 mm

Considering the present price of gold the medal is worth around US $100.

Minted at the Bavarian mint in Munich.

VW's PR department in Wolfsburg should indeed know more about the medal.

Great find.

Thank you ever so much redlock for digging into this

The measurements match precisely, so it is indeed a match. I did a quick calculation and its value today is SEK 1076.62

And thus, this makes the second gold find for this year! Amazing!

I will contact VW to see if I get any more information about this piece. If anything comes up I'll post it here.

Nice catches this week. A gold VW bus! Lots of VW memorabilia collectors out there. I would guess it has additional automobilia collector value on top of the intrinsic value.

Second gold find! Very pleased for you, X2an! Happy we have information.

May we ask redlock as to why it does not notate any indication that it is gold like other medals?

Congratulations!

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that.
As far as I know this was the first gold medal ordered by VW in the 1960s. There are (at least) four more during this decade. Furthermore, I have been told that there are two versions of this ''VW Transporter'' medal.
The one X2an found and another which has the number ''900'' minted on it. I suspect that X2an's version was first and then they added the ''900'' for a second run.
I definitely think X2an should contact VW's PR department to learn more about the medal and the (possible) two different versions.
This being shortly before christmas it could be a while before he gets an answer though.

Lastly, I wonder how many medals were minted in the early 1960s.

Thank you, redlock, for answering my question! I do appreciate it very much! I am glad you were able to help X2an in a big way!!

I agree with you that X2an needs to contact VW's PR department to see if they could share more information with him (and us if X2an could gladly share?) on these gold medals.

We probably will find out in the New Year. :)

I have contacted VW's German customer support, I couldn't find anything more appropriate. I did this a few days ago, still no response as could be expected.
