Guy posted an ad on craigslist asking for 'help' getting it authenticated.

Says his Uncle knew McCann and that he and his family found a coin WITH paper work showing an exchange of $20 gold piece at the Mint in March 1933.

I told my friend this is one of those 'too good to be true' things and has about as much chance of being legitimate as my odds of having my Jeep be an Autobot.

Anybody hear about this guy? Wonder what the scam is? Maybe he is just an imbecile who actually believes he has a 1933?

The scam is he needs "help" getting it authenticated? Really? The "help" is most likely a few hundred dollars with a promise of repayment "when" they sell it...along with a huge share of the profits.

This sounds like it is just a variation of a "Nigerian Money Scam" where the banker or late oil minister's executor sends you an email looking for help in getting money out of his corrupt country. For just a small fee they will send you a jillion dollars.

100% scam.

In all fairness if somebody DID have a 1933 $20 the government fighting viciously to get all of them back would make anybody cautious.

The last 2 times somebody has found a 1933 the Government immediately confiscated them and in one instance actually arrested the owner.

This is going to be a good one. I don't know if that is true that the government would confiscate that coin, but really something to look into. Now if on the internet, doesn't that person realize the government has access to the internet? Look! There are black copters circling his house now.

I think this thread is useless without the craigslist link...
There was a short time-window when the Mint Window did exchange new 1933 $20 Saints for face value or purchased directly...
This is how Isreal Swift was able to purchase a estimated 2 Dozen pieces...
His problem started when they became illegal to own and he lied to the Secret Service in the early 1940's and said he had no more 1933 Saints...
His Heirs deserved to lose all 10 Pieces by being stupid enough to send all 10 pieces, instead of 1piece to the Mint for verifying if it was genuine...

And I really don't think they gave out receipts on Window transactions...

Well guess the guy took the ad down. I do not know many people in NYC who collect but I would love to scream to anybody who contacted that guy and say "NOOOO"

I guess my pal said that eventually the guy requested $200 to show they were 'serious'.

I tried to do some googling and I do believe it's a hoax.

Had to use a cached page. If you do ctrl F and type in "location" you'll find somone's reply to that post. If you click it on, it'll bring you to a current day link of that page, and it has since been removed.
