Certainly no expert here, but imo, more likely a RPM, RePunched Mintmark, but there are over 25 of them for 1953S and it's hard to see yours. Is it possible to get a close-up? Maybe an expert can comment better.
Doesn't look like those pics are any better. :/ The original pics show how the S is touching the 5 and nearly touching the 9 as opposed to the regular mm on the comparision coin.
I know mintmarks were punched by hand until the 80s (I think), so the mintmark location would be all over the place. To have one touching the date would be unusual though.
Yeah I see what your saying the mintmark looks to actually be touching and that shouldnt be this is another coin where the mint has tolerances because they where done by hand so a little off north or south, ect,ect is ok but yours I would love to see if it is actually touching but its way off. I would keep it because thats not normal .
