Hi everybody, I have been going through a can of pennies looking for anything that isn't on most pennies. The first thing is what I wrote in the subject says. If nobody on here knows what I mean by that I can try to scan the coins again but while the scan came out ok when I used 300dpi you couldn't see the raised line that I am talking about and all the lower dpi settings came out blurry. Anyway my guess is that this raised line isn't anything but I couldn't find any information on it. Sorry again for not having any pics. I plan to ask more questions later so if you have any scanning advice that might help that would be appreciated as well. Its a dell photo AI0 printer 922. Thanks, Chad

Hmmm. Pictures are probably going to be necessary. You might try posting the image you have. I don't know, but on my scanner (a cheapo 3-1 printer/copier/scanner), I can choose an area of my scan and then move up to that area. I am not familiar with the Dell.

This raised line goes all around the penny? Or is it on part of the coin and then runs into the rim?

What you are describing is probably what we see when the obverse die is slightly mis-aligned when the coin is struck. It looks like a slight extra rim on a portion of the coin.

A picture would help, but this is the likely one based upon your description.

A scan or a picture of course would be a great help. You should just try it and see what happens.

I think you are probably right. If that is the case. Is that unusual or can I just put them with the rest to be taken to the bank?

I got the picture to work I am sending it along.

What you are seeing is not a misaligned die. It still has no extra value and is very common on plated cents. Our Lincolns since 1982 are a zinc core with a copper plating. The high area that you are seeing around the coin is thought to be a result of the copper plating moving outward during the strike to form those circular areas.

As you do more roll searching you will see more and more of them. You might even see some where the metal almost seems to swallow up the IN GOD WE TRUST, the LI of LIBERTY and the last digit in the date.

Well I do agree with Bills assessment on the coin, but I think the dies were over cleaned and wore the fields thinner so the letters are smaller. Die flow gets strong and it looks like a rim on that area. But Bill was correct for price. Commonly found. I toss them back as I usually keep the nicer coins with smaller amount of wear and a variety going for them. RPM/DD's. The machine doubles I save for educational purposes. You never when you need an image to help in their search for the better coins.
