I would buy this for $6, even with all the damage.

This may be a good place for me to ask this question. If a coin is graded "Details," and the category is Mechanical Damage of one sort or another, is there any sort of quantification as to how many nicks or scratches are too many, or is it a matter of experience and personal judgment to make that call?

Dude, I'd rather spend $6 on that coin than a sandwich from subway!

Update: after almost three weeks I finally received the coin and it appears to be a different one than is pictured on that listing... it is still an ok 1909 VDB, but just the fact it was different kind of irks me... also I have been in contact about the long time it took to get shipped out so the seller also added a 1909 with a little rim ding, a 1931, and a 1934 and also "promised" to send me another one on a list I sent him for free (basically the wheats my mom still needs that are a couple bucks like the earlier dates). So all in all, if he really does send one from my list, I got all that for $6. Not the best seller, but at least tries to make his customers happy... I think I will still give good feedback since he tried anyway. Pic of the vdb I received is below.

Yes, but look at the stains - those aren't going away.
Centsei - experience and judgment, correct. No simple rules.

Hm so the grade is better on this one? On the reverse it is harder to see all the wheat stalk lines and the E Pluribus but is just worn, still visible? Better not having all those nicks on the rim at least

Quote: Hm so the grade is better on this one? Like night and day better. The first coin was basically a cull IMO. It was only worth saving because it's an 09 VDB. The second coin is actually very nice sans the verdigris. But it's the "good" kind of verdigris from what I can extrapolate from pictures (some close-ups would help confirm). Light verdigris is easily removed, I believe it's similar to a coin I use as an example: Either way, if that coin conserves or not, you got a 10-$15 coin now. Even though the seller was slow to ship, you owe him a thanks. Just comment "Slow ship, but took good care of me, good seller." POSITIVE

That example of conservation three posts above this one is darn nice. If I thought I could pull that off, pardon the pun, I might give it a try.
