Here's an 1888 that's still in the mail and I'm really looking forward to receiving it. It cost me $36'00 US and it's certified by ICCS. I'll give everyone a chance at guessing the grade and then I'll reveal the ICCS grade. Pictures are from the listing. There's no mention in comments of the doubling in the date and I was wondering what everyone's opinion would be. Would it be worthwhile to send it in for re-certifiction? Cheers, Bill

i believe most of the 1888 large cents have doubling on the 8's, which is why it doesn't get noted in the ICCS holder. As for grade, my guess is MS60 or 62 RB.

I'm not a good one for "bright and shiny", but I think that the reverse is weakly struck, so I think AU-58 is what ICCS said.

There are about 5 different collectible 1888 repunched 8s (a repunched 1st 8/8, a bead punch middle 8/8 and at least 3 different repunched last 8s, of which this is one type)...
ironically, the only one that ICCS labels "repunched middle 8" is not even a variety, but a feature of every single 1888.

There's more than 5 collectible repunched 8's for that date, especially when counting the various combos, where you have 1, 2, or 3 of the digits repunched. C-V is right about the middle 8, but even that digit has been repunched on some over the hub recut 8. Here's a neat 8 out of place .. the "O" in ONE (but I think PMD):

I appreciate the input from everyone. The ICCS grade is MS-62 RB. Thanks again.
CV is the date pictured below the R/P first eight that you are referring to. I've been looking for another of this coin for over three years and have had no success.

Sorry, here's the picture. This is the best re-punched date that I've seen. For 1888 that is. Cheers, Bill

Here's a neat one to look for: I think that they show up in the reverse order that they were posted in, so those above will be 3rd 8, 2nd 8, 1st 8 last. B

Yes okiecoiner that's the one I have as #2 with all eights doubled and it's definitely collectable. I think the reason I choose them in this order is that I was able to come up with four coins with your eights and as I said I've not seen another coin like the first one. Cheers, Bill

Fourmack, I'd like to see a little doubling on the first eight to place it on a very short list of coins showing the best three eights doubled, as people have said there are a lot of 1888 with doubling so to me it has to be very pronounced. However with that said I also noticed that the "1" in the date also appears to have doubling to me that would be first and a nice find.........now I have to go back and check all my 88's again.
Cheers, Bill
