I'm looking for a type nickel and I think that this is a relatively decent one without any problems.

Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1867-5c-Shi...em2100a57666

I've never really tried to grade these, but using my ANA grading standards book, I would feel comfortable pegging it between VF30 and EF40.

I found a comparable (in my opinion) sold ebay listing here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1867-Five-C...047675.l2557

That sold for $16 total. Is that a good price. Looking for tips and pointers from the community.

Thanks for looking.

On your first link, the obverse looks a bit dull, maybe the pics. The reverse looks good. Still 9.99 is a decent price. If the seller started this one at .99, it would probably be up to $10 by now. The $9.99 start price is a bit of a turn off.

And the second one sold for $16, which is also a good price.

This is one of the toughest series to grade in my experience. I don't think it makes EF, and there is some minor spotting on the obverse, but it seems like a nice coin and certainly the price is right so far.

EF40

Obv: Cross s lightly worn but well defined and bold. Slight wear shows on horizontal lines of the shield. High points of leaves are worn but show all details.

Rev: Number and starts are worn but all details are visible.

VF30

Obv: Leaves show nearly full detail. Vertical lines of shield are worn but sharp and separated. Some horizontal lines in the shield are missing.

Rev: Numeral and stars are worn. Most star centers show plainly.

Based off these I would say it's much closer to VF30. Once again, I'm no expert.

Yeah I'm with you on the vf I like the one you are looking to buy more. That die crack on the reverse gives it some character. Snatch it up.

Coindog, I do like the one I'm looking at better as well. I love die cracks. They're definitely added value for someone like myself. Thanks for the input.

That would be a good buy if the price holds. Be careful with your bidding strategy so it doesn't get sniped away.

If the price is right buy it I agree with a grade of VF30/35 range

KenKat, it did get sniped away. I put in my bid at 7 seconds remaining. Only to see someone snipe it with less.

My take away. I learned a bit about grading a Shield nickel, I didn't overpay, and I'm no worse off than before. All good things.

It happens but there will be another coin that will come along. It definitely takes some patience but as you said, you know that much more when you evaluate the next example.
