The 1877-S is another scarce half eagle from San Francisco. This piece has its issues but is relatively high grade in terms of wear. How would you grade the details, and what problems do you see?

Looks like the eagles neck has been plucked clean. Possibly had a bit of gold shaved off? I'm not so sure the reverse hasn't been milled a bit by looking at the rims. What does it weigh?

The hairlines are clear and the detail might make XF, VF+ at worst. An interesting side note about this date - Nearly 30% of the PCGS/NGC pieces certified are under XF.

I agree with VF-35 details - cleaned. Although the TPG's are lenient when it comes to early gold pieces, I don't think this one would grade problem free.
