Ok, another newbie question...I have 40+ Silver American Eagles I bought back in 1999 and 5 Gold Eagles. I've kept them in airtight plastic containers. Should I get them graded by NGC, and if so, what is the best way to do that. What are the advantages / disadvantages.

Thanks!

My first question is, what do you plan on doing with these ASEs.
Do you want to sell or keep them?

Good question, for now I think I want to keep them. But...I'd like to maximize their value for the future in case I ever do want to sell them.

I would leave them ungraded. You can always have them graded when you're ready to sell.

Some questions
Would the grade 69 or 70? Anything less and its probable not worth while.
Check the raw and graded close prices on ebay is the difference more than the grading and shipping costs to have your coins graded?
When calculating the NGC grading costs remember to include the shipping costs both ways. Its part of your grading fee whether you want it to be or not.
Spider has the right idea unless you really want to sell them now then whats the hurry, procrastination has always worked for me...

I would leave them raw unless:
1) they are key dates
AND
2) they will get at least an MS69 or MS70

Otherwise, you won't break even on the cost of grading (fees, shipping and insurance).

Now I am on a the other side of the road here. I would personally have them graded either way. Yes they are in containers now but what I have found out is that they tone less in the NGC or PCGS slab. Most of the coins that I do get in I have sent off to be graded and slabed. Keep in mind that grading the coins now and spreading them out over time can fit better in a budget then sending them all in at once. The ones that I dont have graded go into albums.
