Since I'm new to collecting, I'm very curious to what the prices of the key dates were like 5 or 10 years ago. Also, it would be a decent way to tell how much they have risen since then. So hopefully someone out there might remember what the going rates were for the keys:

1909 S
1909 S VDB
1914 D
1922 Plain
1931 S

Im looking to complete my set this year, and will be looking at buying these keys. Starting my research on some good prices etc for each key.

This forum rocks btw!

The answer, of course, depends on conditions you want to get. I don't have a price guide ( Red Book) from 5 years ago, but have one from 2005 (which really reflects 2004 prices) vs 2007 Red Book.

Prices were as follows in G/VG/VF/AU 2005 vs G/VG/VF/AU 2007:

1909S: 60/65/120/200 vs 75/80/140/240
1909S VDB: 460/550/700/850 vs 600/700/825/1150
1914D: 120/160/280/900 vs 135/185/340/1200
1922 plain: 400/500/800/3000 vs 475/600/1000/4000
1931S: 50/55/65/85 vs 60/65/75/100 (Note: very tight range, suggests to me you shuold go for the highest grade you can afford)

Here's the RedBook values, 1983 vs 2008

1909S MS60
190 vs 275

1909SVDB MS60
550 vs 1400

1914D MS60
1000 vs 1650

1922 Plain MS60
3100 vs 10000

1931S MS60
90 vs 120

IMO, the 31S is an easy target and under-valued. They were highly hoarded, so lots of good examples are out there....which has held back the price. My guess is we'll see some price increase if Lincoln collecting catches on heavy in 2009 (due to all the media exposure).

Since the Red Book is sort of a Bible of coins, not for prices, just information, You may want to acquire a few. Not sure of where you live but try used book stores, garage/yard/estate sales, flea markets. Try to get some of the older versions. I've seen many of them for $1 each for the ones that are much older. I now have them all as sort of a side collection to coin collecting.
Not sure if still available but you may want to contact Whitman Publishing for one of those first edition reprints of the Red Book they were selling not long ago.

Ya I have been meaning to get the Red Book, but I keep hearing people say its outdated, so I hesitate. I'm sure its a great basis to go off of though. When was the newest Red Book last released, is there one coming up soon to just wait for?

ceaton, RedBook is a wonderful guide, with lots of photos and information. Just use it as a "first look", and then move on to something like Gray Sheet or closed auction prices if you need the most accurate, up-to-date prices. I think every collector should have one.

The Latest Red Book is the 2008 Edition. Sort of a joke though. It came out about April of 2007 and Whitman received many letters and messages of complaints since it was apparent the book was now almost a year early. However, Whitman Publishing has not advertised a newer edition that I know of. I too am wondering if they will come out with a 2009 edition in April of 2008.
Regardless since you don't have any yet you should probably just buy that edition and then look for older editions for a comparison of prices over the years. In reality the prices fluctuate so much lately it is difficult to actually come up with an up to date true price. Probably the best thing is to look up each coin on ebay. Just don't buy there.

You gotta have a RedBook, it's a super guide! The prices, in general, are really not that far off and in some cases the prices are dead on.

Here's an interesting case, while the coin by coin prices were not always accurate, RedBook was REAL close in price for my Lincoln proof collection. I created an Excel sheet to track my buying over the last few months. I have all the Lincoln proofs from 1937 up, the RedBook total price and total of what I paid were within $50!

Looking at picking up a RedBook, when is a good time? I mean, did the 2008 just come out, or will the 2009 be right around the corner and worth waiting for? If barnes N noble's site is right, says the 2008 was published in april 07, is that right?

Try Amazon.com or like Carl said, check Walmart online.... you'll find better price.

I checked out the RedBook and it wasnt really what I was after. I mean its great for all sorts of coins, but for now I'm concentrating on lincolns. I found a RedBook strictly for pennies called "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents". Its a great resource for grading and all sorts of stuff. I'll probably wait for the new RedBook in april. THanks for all the help!
