I was asked if I wanted to buy this $10 eagle. The person sent me pics; I'm not an expert on grading, but I was wondering if this would be a nice piece to pick up or if I can find better pieces out there? (I collect more modern coins (absent the Peace dollars so this would be my first pre-modern gold piece). Thanks

So it looks like he's also doing it on ebay (I'm assuming he's offering for less to avoid ebay fees?).

For $700, it needs to slab at MS63 to break even on the cost of slabbing. It's a common issue with no real grade premium over basic collectability below MS64. I see no conclusive evidence here that the coin is Mint State at all, and circumstantial evidence making me think it circulated a bit.

Luster is pretty weak for a mint-state eagle so I'd guess it's either slightly circulated or has been cleaned in some manner. Minimal marks and a nice overall appearance. Might make a good type coin but with the current low gold spot price the asking price is too high.

I would try to stay as close to the ~$560 melt value as possible.

Get pics outside that 2x2. I wouldn't consider purchasing it with better photos.

I agree the luster looks very weak indicating it's an AU coin. $600 is the most I'd consider paying for it from those pics.
