What is its weight and diameter? From that we might be able to identify the donor coin.

My first thought is POW or internment camp piece of "trench" art

I will get it weighed but it will be awhile. The coin is roughly the size of an English penny. I never thought of the coin as being war time but that would explain the sad portrait. Thanks for the interest.

Another thought is a "remembrance" type of love token for a child that died. In pre photography days some people would keep lockets of hair and the wealthy would make plaster "death" masks. If a parent or other family member was artistically inclined or was already adept at making love tokens they may have carved one to remember the child. That P°28 counterstamp throws me though
