Hi all, I was wondering the approximate worth of these two gold coins? I don't know too much about gold but may have an opportunity since these are being sold at a small local auction. Probably won't get them, but what would a good buying price be? Just looking off Numismedia and ebay, approximately $325 for the 1886 and about $100 for the 1997? Thanks!

The 1997 is out of scope for me so I won't touch it.

The 1886-S is priced about right in your mind (if the noted grade is correct), but even though it's a premium coin in Mint State they are readily available in such grades and this one as a result would be problematic on resale. Another $100 would put you into a Mint State example, and most collectors will go that way.

$300 max on the 1886-s, as a bullion coin or a hole filler in a type collection.

$135 max on the 1997 as bullion.

The 1886-S has 0.2419 troy ounces of gold in it. It weighs more than that due to 10% copper being alloyed into it.

Ah gotcha. So just under 1/4 oz. Thanks for the comments all! As we cannot afford to keep gold at this time, I am looking at it for resale so I will keep these figures in mind and give myself a healthy margin. Most likely won't win them, but you never know until you try! :)

That's why I'm drawing attention to the 1886 as a particularly poor candidate for flipping, even with room for profit. Can't sell if nobody wants it.

Gotcha. That is true, thanks for that pointer Dave. But hey, if I could get it for bullion pricing that wouldn't be a bad thing either ;). The auction has these two coins and then about $900 worth of junk silver dimes, quarters, and halves in bags of "rolls". We will see how it goes and if I even buy anything!

Oh, if it's part of a lot you could get a good price on, that changes the thinking because individual costs get diluted. By all means, then.

Yeah this auction (after seeing the list, not just the pictures) will have around $3000 worth of coins... the approx. $400 in gold and the rest in silver junk/bullion/mint sets. This is going to be fun and I will make sure to make another thread for it if I am able to win anything!

Lets see if this is permitted

---afraid not---

There are a couple of websites out there that list the auction/BIN/other price guides for comparison. Do some looking around and be an informed consumer.

Bump this thread with any new information; I can change the title to something more relevant to the audience if we need at that time. That way, we'll use this space to decide which coins you ought to give their own threads, with a minimum of extra forum real estate being taken up.

Heck, those two gold pieces alone are two new threads, as far as I'm concerned.
