This coin seems to have an artificial burnt-ash, thick fake black tone on it. While this highlight the high relif nature of the coin...but this is a new level.

Has anyone seen this before?

Is the tone fake?

Is the coin fake? (the tone could be hiding problems with the field)

Harrison

BINGO....jewelery antiquing. I knew I had seen it somewhere and that seals it. I liked the coin, but I liked the look on THAT coin even more. That said, I couldn't figure out how the effect was achieved.

Thanks team!!

Yes, it's an extreme form of "circulation cameo", where the coin is deeply tarnished but the tarnish on the high points is worn away. I can't really see such a strong example of it as is seen on that Moroccan coin, happening naturally.

Easiest way to achieve the effect synthetically is to smear on some sulfur-and-petroleum-jelly (or something similarly sulfurous and gooey), then carefully wipe the goo off of the high points.

I have also seen the same effect used to attempt to mask fake coins. I really can't say about this one just from the pics, but if the rest of the coin's specifications check out OK (correct weight, reacts properly to a magnet), then the coin is probably genuine.
