I've been thinking about gradually putting together a set of every coin DC has struck for a while now. Every thread I read about him has its advocates and admonishers. Personally, I am an art lover and coin collector so I see his work as a perfect bridge to the two hobbies/collections. I did't know who to believe though, is he a crook to the hobby or a genius artist with a flair for numismatics? Well, over on CT there is a thread going where he chimed in and in reading his own words about the eminse thought he puts into every issue he designs in.regards to creating something that cannot easily be altered to pass as true numismatic rarities I believe he is a true fringe artist that brings a bit of whimsy to what can otherwise be a somewhat stuffy/stagnant hobby in rgards to classics. Here is one of his replies that showcases what I'm talking about... Quote:Many people have asked me to do an "1895" Morgan dollar business strike. The problem with that would be if some one wore it down until it looked like a circulated 1895 proof. An "1895-CC" would be less of a problem, but someone could scrape off the "CC" and then artificially circulate it. An "1895" over-strike doesn't qualify as a "fantasy-date" because 1895 Morgans already exist. And they are considered a key date, regardless of what mint they are from. But just about ANY coin (genuine or not) could be altered and/or represented in some way so as to perpetrate a fraud with. I've already done the "1909-o" micro-o Morgan dollar over-strike. If I do another Morgan, it would more likely be a "1920" or a "1905". (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/an...6835/page-3) Anyway, just thought I'd share... I don't kn9w how long it will take me and how much it will cost but I think I'm gonna try going for a complete Carr collection... I wonder if there's a DC Dansco lol

I have never bought one of his coins as I just in the last few months have heard of him but if I had known about him years ago when he made the 1964 Peace dollar for $85 I'm SURE I would have bought one. The only one I have seen for sale in the last few months was over $1K. I would have spend $85 - $150 for one but not over a thousand. Good luck and you can always have a custom Dansco made If you proceed please don't forget to share some pics with us!!

I have to agree with you 100% Cascade. Regardless of what the DCarr bashers say, I think the man is an numismatic artist. Good luck with this quest.

Never heard of him. But I'd buy him a beer. Of course I'd buy almost anyone a beer so that is of no big thing.

A Pepsi for sure (I don't drink) When I was a kid and the Ikes were being made, I loved them and was fascinated at getting such a large coin (to collect not spend!) from the bank. Although the 1976 Bicentennials were a lot more special in people's eyes not only for their history, but because back then the standard designs did not change every time someone at the mint sneezed, I was saddened when they broke the line of them and did not make 1975s. As a kid I used to DREAM of finding a 1975 to continue the lineup. Thanks to DC, I have a beautiful looking 1975 Ike - and a 1970! My only mistake was not ordering one of each 1975 when he made them. Now it would cost an awful lot more So of course that got me wanting the 1975 half restrikes, the quarters, and, oh that 1964-D Franklin...

I would buy him a beer, and I like some of his stuff enough to keep if it was a gift, but need to many other coins to spend money on it now. He is a member here, but last time he posted there was a lot of crap thrown his way (dissapointing to see from our membership) and he hasn't been back in a while.

His pieces are certainly beautiful
While I understand some of the critique, I think that as exonumia, his pieces certainly serve an important niche within the hobby

What?! He was criticized with spite to the point of him not wanting to come back? That is NOT the ccf I know guys. I hope this won't go that way and maybe this thread can show him who we really are. We're better than that guys. Now back to the discussion If anyone has a Carr, post em! Edit to add, just incase anyone forgot... CCF= Coin Community FAMILY

I own all the strikes of this medal. I have an exonumia collection with images of the Canadian flag on them, so I was compelled to buy them (this image is from the Moonlight Mint website).

Quote: What?! He was criticized with spite to the point of him not wanting to come back? To be fair, most of criticism was legitimate and not hateful. Really, probably better than others have received. It was probably better for him to leave than to respond to the criticism, thereby putting it on the record. He must know this is a gray area. I wish he would have stuck around. My opinion can be changed with the right argument.
