I never knew he struck a Gary Burke Memorial medal. That's really cool...

The hobby - for me - is having fun. There are very few mmore things that are fun for me than having an impossible coin in my hand. But then striking them on legit coins makes them all the more fun for me - no idea why. Have to sometime gets pics of the rest - these are from awhile ago. 1933 Washington quarter1963 JFK 1975 JFK series 1975 JFK Bicentennials 1909-O Morgan

I think Daniel Carr's craftsmanship and artwork are exceptional actually. Much better than anything I've seen on copper and silver rounds to date. However, I don't now how I feel about what he does from a legal standpoint. And even if they are legal, his " fantasy re-strikes" have the possibility to cause trouble, when say a supposedly real 1964 Peace dollar emerges? If the government tried to confiscate it, the owner could claim it is a re-strike. Also, what if many years down the road, when Carr has been forgotten, these re-strikes were taken for the real thing? But that aside, they are pretty cool to look at!

Oh, to answer the original question fully, no. Like Earle42 I would offer him a Pepsi.

You know jbuck, I considered not using that phrase because of you but thought it appropriate for the point I was getting at and the tone of the conversation it would set

No problem. I have nothing against those who chose to drink and do so responsibly.

I am foursquare in Daniel Carr's corner as one of the true numismatic iconoclasts among us (for me, the highest-possible praise). Regardless of what you may think of his efforts, there is plainly not a larcenous bone in his body and he's putting himself out there as the target for discussions which have to happen in our hobby. We are but a few years from 3D printed coins and consumer-level 3-axis machining accurate enough for a die. And thanks to him, once others start producing this stuff in their kitchens we will have already held it out in front of us and looked at it, and we'll know what to do. Yeah, he doesn't pay for beer if I'm present.

My thoughts exactly SD. When I read his responses on that thread coupled with his sculpture pieces I knew he was a true artist. That should end the debate for everyone. He's an "undergroung" fringe artist of the highest caliber period. I equate him to Banksy in almost every regard aside from medium and subject matter. Right down to the broaching of legality and controversial nature of their art and those are nothing if not the marks of a truely fine fringe artist

I just hate that I missed out on the 1970 and 1975 Ikes when they were first offered for sale. They are so cool. Oh, yes. He'd get a beer from me too.
