Just bought one in a group lot at my LCS for $5. After reading up about it, I'm now scared for my future kids...

Nah, no real danger....

Quote:
These neutrons, having no electrical charge, penetrate silver atoms in the dime. Instead of remaining normal silver-109, they become radioactive silver-110. After irradiation, the dime is dropped out through a slot in the lead container and rests momentarily before a Geiger tube so that its radioactivity may be demonstrated. It is then encased in the souvenir container. Radioactive silver, with a half-life of 22 seconds, decays rapidly to cadmium-110 (In 22 seconds, half of the radioactivity in each dime is gone, in another 22 seconds half the remainder goes, and so on until all the silver-110 has become cadmium). Only an exceedingly minute fraction of the silver atoms have been made radioactive."

Have you seen that movie about the creature from the Black Lagoon? It got that way after sending in for some of those. Of course he did send in for several millions of them and ate them all.
Have you tried placing it in a dark room to see if it glows? Doesn't mean much since they sell paint for kids that do that. However, notice how many kids are vanishing?
Now look outside for those black helicopters. The FBI is watching to see if you make a nuclear power plant with it.
They wouldn't be able to sell those if dangerous. I'd be more worried about your future kids with all the modern stuff they find on the internet.

I showed my semi-nerdy dad the coin and he was running away and telling me he didn't want to see it, or touch it.

JustCarl, and drew... have you heard of the 17yo boyscout in 1995 that built a device that caused a nuclear chain reaction out of smoke detectors for a freakin badge. Can you imagine if it went critical

Here's the wiki of the guy, I'm sure you can find old articles if you're interested

I'd crack it out and put it in an album. If the album catches fire, then you know it isn't safe.

I'll sell it to you for what they sold on ebay for (19.95 to about $40) and you can do it.

Be careful... I had one of those a long time ago, and when I checked on it after a couple years, it was a Half Dime. Best to keep it locked in a box and never open it to preserve its wavefunction.
