There was an article in Numismatic News which stated that the assets of PCI coin grading service were being sold. There was no background information on the company itself, but it seems to me that when the assets are sold off the company ceases to exist. Does anyone have any information about the current status of PCI? Is this 2nd-tier grading service going out of business?

Did the auction already happen? There doesn't seem to be a lot of information on this, plus their website doesn't indicate anything.

The article is on P. 72 of the Jan. 1, 2008 issue of Numismatic News. It says Gravitt Auction, Inc. will hold an auction in Rossville, GA on 01/16/08 to "dispose of all of the business assets of PCI grading service". The sale includes "all property both tangible and intangible from office furniture to the business name and customer list of 13,000-14,000 names".

Sounds pretty ominous for PCI. Anybody have any information to share?

I do know that JT Stanton left PCI last fall and that was probably the beginning of the end. I would think that the ebay decision on recognized TPGs probably contributed as well. Coppercoins is/was one of their Lincoln Cent attribution specialists, he might have some input on the matter. He also might not be able to talk about it due to legal issues.

Here is a link to the auctioneer and the items being sold: http://gravittauction.com/auction_d...hp?ID=375763

I personally considered PCI to be one of the only two legit TPGs besides the Big 4 (the other being SEGS and I say legitimate, not necessarily top notch but both companies have their niches) I just hope some shyster outfit doesn't buy their slab molds, sonic sealers, and naming rights for them to run into the ground in the pursuit of profit

By order of the Board of Directors, all assets of PCI, Inc., tangible and intangible, are to be sold to the highest bidder at "Absolute Public Auction", all for one bid!!
Name, Registered and Unregistered Service Marks, Web Site (if feasible), Toll Free Number, Safes and Office Equipment.

Looks like it's the end of PCI that we know. I could see one of only four options happening: New owner(s) continue it and make it better, continue it and make it worse, shut it down, or make their own company.
