I saw this 1913-S Barber Half on ebay in a PCGS slab with a cleaned designation. I'm still trying to learn the fine art of being able to determine if a coin has been cleaned. What do you see in this coin that says it has been cleaned? I'd appreciate hearing what people have to say. Thanks in advance. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1913-S-Barb...em210113bbe6Paul Bulgerin

Hairline scrathes on the coin, and I'm guessing its more noticeable then the seller wants it to be because of the small pics

I would bet there are hairlines on the cheek, as if the coin was wiped with a microfiber cloth or terrycloth.

Yes, lack of blow-up option suggests seller doesn't want to give a close look at the surfaces.

Paul , I cannot see a strong reason why PCGS says it's cleaned. perhaps a one second dip . but in my opinion , nothing is screaming cleaned on this coin.

without larger images you cant see the possible scratches, it is definitely not heavily cleaned as there is little to no halo effect around the legends.

Quote: It has a few faint hairlines from a very light wipe That was quoted straight from the sellers description

The cleaning is most likely more evident in person than it is in the provided photos.

The mentioned hairlines are almost invisible in the photos but the photos are nevertheless of high quality in my opinion. The color suggests that the coin was possibly dipped white at some point and has since retoned somewhat. Luster still looks very strong. If the potential buyer were so inclined, this coin might make it into a problem-free slab if cracked out and re-submitted. The evidence of cleaning seems pretty weak.
I've purchased several coins from this seller and consider him to be honest and ethical. I see nothing deceptive about this listing.

It's a great coin and appears to have very light hairlines. TPG can't over look that when grading so the buyer of this coin will still get a nice piece. Great for break out and housing in a 7070.
