Hello,

I just found this coin today searing through pennies. Could anyone help me out. Is this a legitimate error? The coin is slightly concave/convex depending on what side you are looking at.

Not an error, just extreme heat damage. The zinc core partially melted which wrinkled the copper plating(Zn m.p. 787F vs Cu m.p. 1984F).

Can you explain the flange running around the rim?

No, but it is largely irrelevant because it is all just damage. It is the equivalent of leaving a foil-wrapped chocolate in your car on a hot day and then putting it in the fridge to re-solidify, it will not remain in a nice round flat shape like the original.
Rest in Peace

What you might be seeing is the plating splitting from the zinc core. My guess is it was exposed to medium high heat over time like a fire place as opposed to say intense, quick heat from blow torch. Just a guess
