Well, ongoing submissions from karrlot and mycrob reinforce the idea that SMALL DATE 1982 cents are indeed very, very rare. GOSH - in my sample of Copper cents - I only had 3 Small Dates out of 382. So, LESS than 1% of my 1982 coppers were Small Date. Yet the Red Book just says that mintages are all mixed together. And the value of the coin is pretty much the same as the Large date. I don't care who responds or what happens here-----> COLLECT/HOARD the Small Date 1982 Cents !!! A Modern Rarity - yes - RARE - Not Scarce..

someone said, " If they just balance, they are both the Zinc ones. The nice thing about this system is in the eating of the material on the sticks of course."
and it's cheap !

I believe that once the Cent Project data are tabulated, it will reveal the same thing about the rarity of the 1982 small date, and it may lead to being able to back-calculate approximate mintage figures for the large vs small date, but I don't know if those approximate mintage figures will ever make it into the Red Book, unless CC has connections with the writers of the Red Book.

To be honest, that is what I really use to tell the difference. Almost all the coins I look at are very well circulated, so sometimes the date "flattens" out and it's bit difficult. But, yes, always check to see if the "2" in 1982 is close or far from the rim - that's what I use now.

I thought you can look at the '8'. If the top and the bottom circles are the same size then it is a large date. If the top circle is smaller than the bottom it is a small date. Am I correct?
Ford F150 reported results of all 8 types. I thought that there were only 7. I have no idea because I've lost two of my reference books, but I thought that there was one type that was not minted.

FORD: There were only 7 1982 tpyes and you have 8. One of the Denvers is in the wrong category, but I don't have my reference book in front of me- I think 82D Small date Zinc does not exist.

karrlot - you are perfectly right!! I love it.
I've never read this, but it is accurate. I've pulled several of my pennies to check and you're right.
1982 penny searchers - a new and easy way to distinguish Large/Small dates - thanks to karrlot!

for the 1982 I just look for the curve in the 2 which indicates a small date. you can get a decent gram scale at Harbor Freight for about $10 or so.

Just try and remember that any statistics anyone acquires by counting or weighing the 1982 cents would be flawed by the location of where you are. In some locations cetain coins are more prevelant by distribution of the Mints. Even after all these years some areas would still have a larger amount of certain coins than other locations. If you searched 1,000,000 of them, your statistics would be only a small, small fraction of the total amount distributed and/or still remaining. If for example you could check the over 16,000,000 minted and could do a coin a second it would still take you over 6 months to do this. If you do though, let us know the results.

This has been a very useful thread for me so far - thanks! It's great to see all the different ways people are using to tell the large and small dates apart. Here's my numbers from 3 boxes of cents.
1982 large copper: 23 1982 large zinc: 108 1982 small copper: 1 1982 small zinc: 4 1982D: large copper: 25 1982D: large zinc: 3 1982D small zinc: 4
