Poll Question
Had a recent auction win on ebay $5.00 & free shipping for a group of low grade small cents. I received the items, but they were different than those pictured (buyer did not disclose it was stock photo). The picture had a 1929 high 9, the actual pennies did not, so it feels a bite like a bait and switch.

When I contacted the seller, he apologized, but did not see the issue with the photo, was dismissive of my concern that he is showing a moderately valuable variety, but not shipping it and seller is aware of variety .

As compensation, he sent a replacement group of cents as compensation (not my choice), similar low grade. It is/was not worth my time to return the item(s), but I am undecided on the feedback to leave. Either neutral or negative, as the seller did make an effort to remedy the situation.

What would you do?

I said neutral. You have the option to return the items as "Not as described" but choose not to (I probably wouldn't either for the low value of the listing) so I think negative is a bit harsh. I would tend to reserve that for the worst of the non-responsive sellers.

Given the particulars you gave us, I would give a Negative.

Reason: Since he did not disclose prior to the end of auction the photos he used to sell the auction were "stock", he did not represent the auction coins properly or ethically.

You gave the Seller a chance to make things right (which I completely agree with before giving Negative Feedback), but, he chose not to send you the coins he represented as part of the auction.

Bottom-line, his coins he sold you were not the coins he "told" you he was selling.

Negative.

Oh boy...

Clearly he made some type of effort... you ended up with twice the number originally...

I agree with pacific you would need to post the listing for an accurate answer but please take these two factors into consideration:

1. It's 5 bucks.
2. He did make a reasonable effort

I am wondering here if you notified the seller that there was a high 9 in his listing and $5 was far too cheap for this lot
Settle Petal, It's a lousy $5 and you got a double dip anyway.
Why leave feedback at all , Walk away to bid another day

My thoughts exactly. It's $5 and he did send you another lot for free, more than enough to compensate for his error. Furthermore, you did have the option to return the item, you chose not to because it was not worth your time, which is fair, it wouldn't be worth mine either.

If it was me, I would request that the seller edit his listing(s) to say that the pictures are stock.

As far as feedback goes, I think I would just not leave any. It wasn't a positive experience but not worth affecting his seller rating/increasing his fees over either.

I disagree. $5 is too much to pay for 5 (or 10) regular pennies, even Wheat cents. I recently picked up 20 IHC and Buffalo nickels for $1 a piece, just last week.

Knowing ebays posting rules on pictures purelywasted has the right to expect what he saw in the picture. How about if a 1909 S VDB LWC was shown and a 1909 'no s' VDB LWC was received? Awwww, it's a stock photo, shut up, here's another one? I don't think so.

This is a slippery slope.

Waste 'em in comments, purelywasted.

I would scan his past listings and feedbacks to see if it's a common scam or just maybe a oversight.

I Vote negative. it doesn't matter what the compensation is, he didn't bid on the coins that were sent to him. a buyer has every right to receive what he saw in sellers photos. ( If stock photos not mentioned )

Read the topic and check the forum. The coins purchased by OP are not wheat cents. George V cents are worth considerably more than wheat cents which can be found for 4x face value.

To the OP, is this the listing?

Neg with a comment as of why I gave a neg feedback, by not giving a comment the cycle will go on, and others will fall into the same situation

I had the same problem with this very same seller a few years ago. I even asked him before the auction ended if the coins pictured were the ones I was bidding on. He replied yes. Needless to say when the coins arrived the scarce variety in the pic was not there. I tried to resolve things with him without ebays help for a while. He maintained that I got a coin same date as the one pictured, why was I complaining? I got my refund gave him a neg and he harassed me a few times by email. Give him a negative, his eyes are wide open, he's pulled this stunt before.
