I am trying to convince myself that this coin is the 1888/7 overdate (for obvious reasons). I see the little bump at the bottom of the last 8, and the top of the 8 looks like it has lines going through it diagonally, however, I sent this picture to Heritage and got a one sentence reply that "this is not the overdate", so I guess I'm looking for a second opinion. Am I nuts?

It was nice of Heritage to respond to you.

Not nuts, just hopeful I'm no expert on these, but don't see it. The bump is in the right spot, but too small imo. I'm sure others will chime in.

To examine IHC varieties it is helpful to have full pictures of the obverse and reverse of the coin and closeup of the date in relation to the bust In most cases date position is a very important marker. I believe the date position on your coin is slightly off.

Another important marker is a Cud at 9:00 on the obverse. I believe it is found on almost all overdates (extremely worn coins may be an exception). If it is on your coin then maybe we have something to talk about.

There should also be a small portion of the 7 showing above the last '8' (looks like a die chip). I don't see it on your coin.

So, I don't believe your coin is an 1888/7.. Sorry

Wishful thinking, I'm afraid. I'm attaching a full obverse, just in case someone sees something that might give me hope.

.

Definitely not an 1888/7. None of the markers are there.

Sorry, date position relative to the bust is wrong - this is definitely not the S-1, 1888/7.

As others have said, unfortunately it's not an 1888/7. Keep searching though, and you might find something!
