Some 20yr came to my bank Friday with a bag of change to deposit for gas money. In it, a 1995 silver eagle and a 1922 Peace dollar! How he didn't care about those two, I don't know. I would think even people who don't care about coins would go "you know, I never see these. maybe they are valuable!"

I'll get pics later when my phone starts working!

Nice!
Although I will agree that there's a good chance that they were stolen, or that the person depositing them is a complete idiot, or both.

I'm a teller also, and this happened to me too back in early 2014. No Peace dollar though, just an ASE (which also happened to be a 1995).

It may have came from someone's old coin hoard, like grandma or grandpa's. Probably has more than just those two collectables in it.

I don't know. There was a guy I worked with a few years ago who brought me a silver quarter that he said just wouldn't work in the vending machine. He found out that I collected coins and brought it to me. I told him that silver was at "such and such" a price, and he only would accept a quarter for it. I tried to give him more but he refused. Some people are just that way.

Wow, that Eagle is in great shape considering it was thrown in with other coins! Nice Peace dollar too, love the wear on it. Great find!

Cool finds

I concur that it was stolen, either by a thief or by someone dumping their inheritance

Yes - feeling that these may have been taken from a collection.

An eagle has a face value of $1. Is that all that's on the deposit slip?

Do numismatists ever have any obligation to divulge the true value of any coin to a 'low information' coin seller?

I've often thought about this subject multiple times and struggle with its answer...1-Confused

There is no obligation in the legal sense.

As a matter of morals.....I think I would base it on how big a jerk the "low information" person is. lol

Inherited or stolen. The coins were deposited out of ignorance.

I tend to pick out wheat pennies everyday. If they people are nice (or if they have a kid) I try to give them back to them and explain what they are. Most of the kids get super excited and snatch them like a treasure. Makes my day. This guy on the other hand, threw a bag of change at me. I wasn't going to say anything.
