I am looking at completing my modern Canadian set (1968-2015) in MS and would appreciate any strategies or recommendations on completing this efficiently and at a reasonable cost. Need FV: ~$110 Number: ~140 pc Grade: MS 63+ ( TPG not needed) Varieties: No varieties required Should I look at dealer and ask for some kind of package price, go piece meal, by denomination, etc... - 50 cent pieces (33pc) - Loons (10pc) - Nickle dollars (9pc) - Toonies (15pc) - Quarters (~44pc) - Dimes (~15pc) - Nickle (~15pc) - Maybe a few more for upgrades It would be nice to complete these and spend more time focusing on Pre 1967's. My ultimate goal is a complete set of Canadian circulation coins Edited by purelywasted 08/31/2015 12:02 pm

My first suggestion would be to get a box or two of each denomination and try and coin roll hunt. Chances are slim you will find stuff in earlier than 2010 in MS 63 condition or better but you never know unless you try.
If CRH'ing doesn't appeal to you .. I suggest making up a specific want list and distributing it out to a few local coin dealers in your area and asking their best price for the whole lot. Some dealers may have only a few things off your list and so as you go and pick up the pieces you can cross 'em off your list.
When you're done please post picks.. would like to see it all!

My first suggestion was to go to a coin show and fill up the list from a dealer selling BU singles. I sell a truckload of coins like this at shows, since few dealers seem to offer BU singles from post-1967... but you are in a province which seems to lack coin shows...

I agree with the coin show suggestion. I have had great luck at shows and often they are more amenable to haggling.
If you develop a good relationship with a coin show guy they will often remember you and save certain coins for you or keep a copy of your list.

That would be my suggestion for consideration as well, particularly when you have 2 or more spots to fill in the same year. Often an uncirculated set sells for less than the price of one BU coin and sometimes specialty sets (baby, wedding, Xmas, etc.) are even better priced. Personally my experience of attempting to buy select recent years of BU coin on ebay was very frustrating because some of what's sold is by roll hunters and not BU as advertised. I think roll hunting, selling on ebay as BU or MS has become a national pastime for some because circulated coinage within the last 20 or so years is easy to find. Otherwise individual shipping charges add very substantially to the cost of buying a few coins at a time. PS I'm betting you'll greatly enjoy accumulating your collection pre-1967, even more so than post years.

Keeping in mind that the pliofilm sets are BU finish (NBU, MS NC, PL or whatever you want to call it with '96 & '97 being specimen) and not Circulation finish up to and including 2010 of course. The specialty sets (wedding, baby etc) are pretty much all Circulation coins starting in 2006 to date. PM me your list if you like; I've got a box of nickel dollars kicking around here somewhere.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone and to those that sent a PM, I will send out a list by tonight. I definitely enjoy the pre-67's, those past 1968 have been holes that are bothering me and debating on just heading down to J&M to see if they would make some kind of deal. BU/PL's - Thanks for the suggestion, but I am looking for MS coins. Definitely agree it is brutal trying to sift through MS-BU on ebay. Roll hunting - I have done some of that and agree it is hard to find MS coins. Coin shows - I agree, we don't have a lot out here and I always seem to be away on the weekend they are happening.

Thanks for the suggestion Pacific, I am assuming that is Foot Stamps & Coins. I think post 1968 is not a bad area for big lots, not sure how many people like me are out there (not main focus, not looking for top grade, fill holes in set), very pricey on ebay to try and complete.

Personal feeling is that the market for modern coins is not terrible. On ebay and to Canadian buyers no because we track everything now and do not list low priced lots any longer . However at markets shows and locally looks not bad. A good reason could be that very little is available from roll searching or change anymore . Also not a lot of stuff was saved new like it was back in the roll bag craze of the 1960 s. Have fun finding a lot of that stuff you need. I will bet it is easier to find a mint roll of 1959 cents as compared to a roll of 2009 let say. And yes that is old Bill Foot the rascal! You mentioned .

A big thanks to SPP for helping me fill most of the missing spots from my 1968+ set. I only need 27 from a list of 434 coins to go. Will happily purchase from him again and highly recommend to others.
A question for the forum. I based my list on the PCGS registry set, but it seems to include a few that are not circulation coins, for example;
2000 P - 10 cent (test token?) 2000 P - 50 cent (only in watch?) 1999 - $2 - Polar bear (PL sets?)
However, they exclude 1997-2001 loonies and most of the 1992, 1999,2000 and later special quarters. The coins that make the list, seems a bit random on inclusion/exclusion and would appreciate your thoughts.

PCGS exists to grade coins, not to catalogue coins.Most collect according to Charlton's to avoid all the problems you mention. Only those in the Registry set game collect according to PCGS, they have no choice.
