There's a 1901 50 Cent listed on the Australian version of a popular auction site, I've just noticed it now with 12 hours to go. Needless to say I'm highly suspicious of anyone selling a raw coin of this worth on this particular website and only using scans, just wanted to open this up to get the thoughts of others regarding the authenticity of the item in question: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1901-CAN...AOSw5VFWGZRGThanks!

His spelling is off, and he uses the dreaded "ALL CAPS" frequent on counterfeit sellers. The following is an unaltered direct quote by the seller. Not intended to be yelling. Quote: THIS IS A TRUELY MAGNIFICENT COIN. THE LIGHT BAG MARKS YOU SEE ON THE SCAN ARE NOT VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. HAVE A LOOK AT THE OBVERSE AND THE QUALITY AND DETAIL OF THE QUEEN AND THE CROWN. THIS YEAR IS PARTICULARLY VALUABLE AND ASKING PRICE FROM SOME CANADIAN DEALERS IS IN THE THOUSANDS. CAN'T START ANY LESS THAN $300.00 BUT WILL GO FOR SOMEWHAT MORE. THIS IS A COIN USUALLY OFFERED AT HIGH END AUCTION HOUSES.PLEASE CONSIDER.

ebay covers counterfeit items, so no risk really to find out what it is. The coin looks fine in detail, but I'm curious with it lit so harshly what sort of cleaning it may have gone through - no parallel lines though.

In comparing about 10 points on the coin listed against a coin from a reputable dealer in Canada that's selling for $2500 or so, there appear to be some differences. But, with the lighting so harsh on the coin in question, I would have a tough time saying it's fake - it is amazingly clean and the lines on it are very, very sharp - maybe too sharp. I have a bad feeling about it. The seller moves a lot of coins, but mostly $10 items from the 1960's. If you have time and the will to deal with ebay on returning a counterfeit, then go for it. It may be real. On the other hand, if hassles like that raise your blood pressure, who needs it? 50/50 I'd say.

Thanks for a working link DBM..
That coin dose indeed look perfect...scary good in fact..
Any normal collector would have it graded before offering it..

It might just be my eyes or the lighting, but the date looks different among other small things. Look at the tail of the 9 and the inside of the 0. I'm not saying it's counterfeit, but I would certainly wanted it graded before purchasing.

Thanks for the link DBM. Nice looking coin the scans are poor though. Seems real to me, IMO.

JimmyD, the 9 on your coin appears suspect, the 9 on the ebay coin is normal. Do you have more pics?

Here is the other one... 221336837860This one looks off? Coin appears out of round and no initials.

Thanks for the feedback, I was trying my best to compare the coin in question with genuine examples but was having a really tough time given the scans. I thought St. Edward's crown looked a bit off but again that might be the quality of the photos... I just can't get past the circumstantial evidence, even before reading the item description I was thinking why wouldn't this be submitted to one of the big Auction houses in Sydney to get top dollar? There are a few to choose from and some high end Victoria 50 Cent pieces have fetched good prices at recent Noble auctions (top grade 1898 sold for $4200+commission, an 1890 sold for $5000+ at the last auction). Maybe someone here will take a chance and end up with a deal on a nice genuine piece at a nice price but I have to stay away from this one.
