Hi,
I'm curious whether anybody here has had success with buying bulk lots of Indian cents--particularly those which aren't too picked over, culls, or otherwise cleaned/molested. As I've had mixed results myself with wheat cents, I know there can be a significant quality difference between sources. And I'm not averse to paying a little more for quality. If you have any good tips, leave me a note here, or email me.

So here's my deal for you: if your tip leads to some good finds, I'll share a few of my discoveries with you. Naturally, you should be skeptical, so check out my posts here to see my record of discoveries over the past month.

I'm buying my bulk Indian cents mostly off ebay. All four of the large lots of >500 coins each I've won were fantastic. All were mixtures of culls, G, VG, F, VF coins (one lot had some AU pieces!); all had pre-1880 coins (some more than others). My average price paid with shipping is running around $1.15 each- a little higher than I'd like to pay, but the pre-1880 coins and a lot of nicer condition offsets it. I really like to go under a $1 a coin, but it seems to be pretty hard to do. I also bought about 300 from my local coin shop for under a $1 each (with about 30-40 culls) and came away with several nice coins (2 1909, eg, many VG and some F-VF) and a 64L they didn't realize was in the mix.

There is one ebay seller who is willing to sell me >1000 IHC in bulk for $1 ea and he guarantees all G or better and no culls and guarantees a certain amount of pre-1880. I'm really thinking about it, but it's a lot of money and I already have almost 10,000 Indian cents in my hoard, most of which I haven't searched yet for varieties and errors.

Kurt: can you put up a picture of the 1888/87 error that shows clearly the 8/7? The RedBook has a picture with the 7 off to the side of the 8, but elsewhere I've read says the 7 is underneath the 8. Are there multiple 8/7 error types? If so, which one(s) are most valuable? I have hundreds of 1888 to check for this error, but don't really know what to look for exactly.

Mycrob, thanks for the info! Those sources sound like in the ballpark for me, if there's some good quality coins. The hard thing about searching for die varieties is that you need to be able to see small details, and coins under F don't reveal too much, which is why I'm trying to avoid overly worn coins.

Regarding the 1888/7, there are two varieties: one is called the "Ruddy" variety, which is Snow-1, and is the rarest 88/7 with the bottom of the 7 emerging from SW of the last 8. The second 88/7 (Snow-2), is the "Fivaz" variety, and was actually proven to be a 1888/888 RPD. The latter variety has an extra digit emerging from the pearl necklace. In terms of a coin with the 7 off to the side of the 8, all I can think of is the Flying Eagle 1858/7, which has a remnant of an earlier 7 to the NW of the last 8. Of those three, by far the Snow-1 1888/7 is the most rare and valuable. I'll post pics later after I get some work done.
