I was in an old park in Milwaukee, WI on Monday when, much to my surprise, I dug up a live .45 bullet! I've found fired bullets before and a live .22 round or two in woods, but finding this in an urban park was an unpleasant surprise. I'm going to give it to a friend who will safely dispose of it for me. Paul Bulgerin

I've dug similar from an old site. Hopefully it has been in the ground a long time and not a recent drop. Maybe someone was doing some target practice a long time ago and dropped it.

It was only an inch down and didn't look very old. I suspect it was dropped recently.

Hopefully it was an accidental drop and you won't find anymore. I have noticed that people who go out shooting will bring their camping chairs and leave some rounds/shells in the cup holders, bags, etc. and bring that chair to the beach and accidentally drop them. Happened on a private beach that I would pound all summer with new drops all the time. I found a couple of .22 LR casings this way.

Well, on my first metal detecting trip (there were 5 of us, one even an archeologist who likes to metal detect in free time) we found a ... Well, a granade from second world war. I don't know much about the types, but it was cca. 40 centimeters long, Italian made. It was about 5-7 cm below ground on a trail in a forest where people go jogging. A buddy of mine was digging, and, upon recovering the back end, he said: "Oh, it's some sort of pipe." I touched the thing and felt it wasn't hollow, so - not a pipe. Then I noticed the cracked copper ring. The ambient after that became kind of a general: "Oh, crap."

I have found an unfired shotgun slug at my local park before. It's scary when you have kids but hopefully it was not there with bad intentions. Just dropped by an outdoorsman by accident.

This is fascinating. I never would've guessed one would find bullets there...

I just found something just as scary...
I was metal detecting my front yard when I found what looked like a piece of copper pipe. I started to pick it up when I noticed it was a .22 round! I was a little freaked out, and I thought it was live so I carefully pulled it out with my shovel and found out if was fired. My house is surrounded by other houses, and there is no way someone was just shooting a .22 rifle outside for no reason. Too many houses. Anyways, its probably from the 40s or 50s. Very interesting, and finding it reminded me of this thread.

Finding live ammo on a school playground and in parks is not a surprise anymore. I have found my share and it's something that I just wasn't there.
