First of all say hello to everybody, is my first post, I'm from Spain and I'm new to the coins world.
I have been trying to find information on this coin but had low success, it seems like there are few coins with the owl standing front. Could you help me on identifying the coin?
Weight: 10,6 gr.
Diameter: 270 mm
Thanks in advance

I can't fid a match but the only coins I have seen with the owl facing forwards with wings spread are the coins from Pontos, Amisos. Of this sort I can only find silver coins which are clearly not a match but I wonder if this is a bronze from the same place?

I had a look with no avail. Another thought is Velia, Luciana.

I found this one which is similar style of owl but a smaller coin... Lucania, Velia. Circa 350-300 BC. AE 13mm. Laureate head of Zeus left / Owl facing. Rutter HN 1328.

I have no experience with this type of coin but to me it looks a bit cartoonish.

Does anyone else think this is a modern cast?

Thanks for the information, the coin is made of silver and it was much more dirty, could it be a rare one? or maybe counterfeit?

Either is possible I think, until we can find exactly what it is supposed to be. I made a stupid statement earlier because it is obviously silver (I remember thinking how oxidised it was but that it was silver, but then when I went hunting for some reason I forgot about that...)

I hope we can find what it is supposed to be because it is an interesting design.

My first impression was that it was a fantasy piece and not a real coin. But I can't see any signs of casting so I'm not sure at this point. The weight seems light for a silver coin of 27mm. Do you have any idea where it was found?

Tonight I'm going to meet my neighbour who is the owner and I will ask more about the origins. Also I have read in other posts that a picture of the edge is useful. I will try to take some good ones. Thanks guys for the follow up.

I thought the obverse had hair, but I am seeing a crest, not sure if it is a decorated helmet. The image appears to show teeth which is a bit unusual. A bit of soaking in distilled water and brushing with a toothbrush might give more detail.

I'll try to get him to do that distilled water process. Can it damage the coin if not done properly or lower its quality?

Distilled water is the safest of all cleaning methods. Soak for a day or so. Get a toothbrush and cut the bristles so that they are half their original length, it doesn't matter if they are a bit tatty. Give the coin a good brush and put back into the distilled water. change the water if it becomes cloudy. Repeat until you are satisfied.

Don't use tap water. Distilled water has no impurities. The thought is that minerals and other stuff in the coin will leach out into the the DW making it easier to clean. Don't use anything sharp to clean it. You can use bamboo or toothpicks in the nooks and crannies, but start with the toothbrush.

A few notes:

Not all reproductions are cast. Some are struck. But before I say more I would like to see the obverse with the light at a different angle.

The odd lighting, which comes from behind the figure, does give it a "cartoonish" look. I'm not connecting it to anything recognizable this way. Perhaps if the light came from in front of the face it might be recognized.
