OK, I finally broke down and bought it. I was very nervous about the price, and still am to an extent. But the bottom line is I like it. I paid $697 after tax, fair market value for a full red. But mine is a not full red, it's PCGS MS-65 Red and Brown. I didn't feel like spending the time required to take half decent photos, so sorry about the blur. But I think the pictures do give you a good idea of how it looks in hand. The reverse is an even, slightly tanish red with very subtle hints of purple in the feels. I'm not sure if NGC will do this, but I would like to try for a "cross over" grade IF they will assign it a Star rating.

Beautiful Cent there! It should be a Star! I have been shopping for one of those myself. I found one but it's not as pretty as yours. I put an offer in on it but the fellow sold it at a coin show before he got my email...opportunity lost. http://www.rareassets.com/g2/1c.197...1701983.html

Beautiful! And, personally I prefer RB coins over RD; prices are far too volatile on the latter, and who knows how long before that RD is an RB? Congrats!

Newbie question: What makes that a $700 coin?

Welcome to the Forum! If you look at this picture you can see that it is different that other cents with the doubling of the date and lettering not to mention the great condition of his coin.

ouzo66, it's a 1972 Double Die Obverse. It's certified by PCGS to be MS-65 Red and Brown. The demand for a 72 DD has been growing tremendously, as have all Lincolns.
Grey Sheet ask for MS-65 Red is $690. With copper coins there are three color variations: Red, Brown, and Red-Brown. Obviously Red has the most market value. This one is a Red-Brown, but I paid the full Red price because to me the toning and eye appeal is worth it.
But in almost all cases a full Red will command much higher prices than a Red-Brown or Brown.

How many were minted? Nobody knows...but the basic estimate is around 50,000 coins...conservatively. The number still out there to be found? Probably a little less than half the mintage (which nobody knows) minus the number that are already known to be in collections (which again, nobody knows). Fewer than a couple thousand at the very most, I'd say.
Wanna buy some original bank wrapped rolls of 1972 cents to test the theory? ;O)

At coin shows some years back there were those 72 Double Dies all over the place. Most were about $200 and I thought that was just outrageous. I bought a few back then in MS65 grades but thought I really over did it. Then suddenly the prices were in the $300, then $400 then up, up, up. Now the same dealer at the same coin show has a few but the prices are in the $600 and up range. I'm not sure but it appears this is happening overnight or maybe as old age settles in I loose perception of time. Not sure but I think this is becoming one of the fastest growing values in the Lincoln Cent coin series. As with anything I keep saying why didn't I buy more back then.
