I saw this Maxentius follis on ebay and the obverse looks funny to me. I am wondering if it has been tooled to enhance the hair on Maxentius' bust and the obverse legend.

What do others think?

I'd say yes, whoever did it was very good.

Personally, I don't think the hair has been touched. The hair on lots of the Maxentius folles at coinproject look quite similar to this. However, I can easily believe that some of the edges of letters in the legend have been enhanced.

Something unusual is going on at the top of Max's head...Perhaps encrustation? Or perhaps corrosion? (I can't tell if it's above the surface or below)

I am viewing on my iPhone and am at a slight disadvantage. When I enlarge too much the image is pixilated.
I don't see obvious signs of tooling.
But we need define tooling ! The surfaces may have been scraped a bit. I don't consider that to be tooling. The hair and beard show remarkable detail for this type issue but I don't believe it to be a result of "tooling" which I define as actually cutting into the metal rather than scraping away surface 'crusties'.
Many tooled coins display bizarre hair styles that make me want to scream.

I like the coin and have no problems with it
Very nice !

Cleaned but not tooled. Looks good to me too. As RF said, tooling alters the distribution of the metal. I don't see that here.

If you are selling this one, please do send me a link.

Thanks for the responses. Normally tooling occurs on large Setertius, Dupondius and As sized AEs, so a follis sized coin was a bit unusual.

The coin isn't mine. I came across it while looking at coins on ebay UK.
