Also, what would you say is the "ideal" amount to order? I have about 100 dollars I invest in coin roll hunting. I visit two different banks (alternating) every two to three weeks.

1 Bank, $25 in cent's or $20 for 2 rolls of halfs. I've only gone through about $60 in halfs and I've found 1 NIFC (2003 D).

I have several banks at which I just ask for $10 in cents (although I ask for "pennies"). I get a mixture of machine-wrapped rolls and people-wrapped rolls. I do get boxes of cents, and those are always all machine wrapped, so I think it is good to sometimes get people-wrapped rolls to mix it up a bit.

"Ideal" depends on you and what you want, and maybe the size of the branch. I went into a small branch one time to get $10 of cents and was told they could not let me have them because then they might not have enough penny rolls for their business customers (!?!).

Sometimes I get any number of rolls of other denominations to make my purchase or withdrawal an even number (e.g., 20 cent rolls and 9 quarter rolls or a box of cents and three rolls of dollars).

I go to a small bank and order 10 boxes of cents about every ten weeks. Turn in the non keepers to a different bank.

It depends what you are after. For $125, you can get a box of nickels and a box of cents to search. If you variety hunt, it'll take you around 3 weeks to go through them (especially cents given the number of varieties).

Before I quit searching dimes last year due to increasing account fees, I was picking up around $1,000 in dimes each from 3 different banks, all customer rolled, each month. Be it $10 a week, or $10,000 per week, you will soon discover what works best for you.

I'm going to start searching rolls this payday. I think I will try a mix of all kinds of coins.

i think there are 2 keys when roll hunting

1) Volume
2) quality of rolls

you need to always be looking for CWR becasue this is the #1 way of getting older coins (silver, wheats, buffs) so if your current bank is not providing these, you need to either specifically ask for them, or move to another bank.

for me with $100 I would ask for 10 rolls of dimes and 5 rolls of quarters, I would say something like " the older the better"

I pick up 500 in halfs from two diffrent locations each week. Also pick up 500 in dimes from various places. I use to do 5 boxes of halfs a week now its down to 1000 a week.

Yep, customer wrapped rolls are the best way to get a *string* of older coins. It also sometimes results in picking up somebody else's dump. The last 20 rolls I searched were all marked on the outside, and I got nothing remotely collectible, except a couple of 1982 small date cents that nobody else looks for anyway. Somebody's dump. But I also have received whole rolls of wheats from CWR.

The machine-wrapped rolls at least are random, and you won't get somebody's dump. But you also won't get a string of collectibles. That's why I like to mix it up. Other countries (e.g., Canada) and other geographies (I'm middle Atlantic) may have different dynamics.

For "varieties," the best book may depend on the type/denomination of interest (different "best" for each denomination/type).

For overall cherrypicking opportunities, consider The CherryPickers Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States coins, Vols. I and II (Official Whitman Guidebooks). I do not yet have them (bad me, bad me), but Vol. I has a new edition being published later this month and I'll snatch both volumes then (see related thread https://goccf.com/t/239310 ).

Just started buying boxes of pennies from my bank and bought about 5 this week. I went in for more today and they were out :/

I try to buy half dollars but my bank doesn't order or carry them. Just a few lose ones at the front desk.
