I'm just looking for a second opinion on this coin ..
It looks AU to me and seems to have a decent amount of luster for a 50-53 coin !!
What's you thoughts ? On grade , cleaned or original ,and what would you pay ?

I'd say it clearly makes AU-50. It does not appear cleaned to me.

Thanks ,

I thought it looked like a nice au50 maybe 53 on a really good day .. My main concern even though It doesn't appear to have been , is if it's been tampered with .. So would 25 be a good buy on this coin ?

Anacs is doing 10 coins for 11.30 each with free return ship and insurance ...
I just purchased the coin in question for 22 bucks ..
Hopefully ANACS will see a nice AUish coin aswell !!
I need to find two more problem free coins , I really appreciate everyone's help and hope I'm not a bother !!

it looks like an old water and rag wipe. the devices on both sides clearly have some level of grime in them while the highest points of those reliefs are clear of any. Its one of those coins where one would say "market acceptable", meaning, its got more than a fair shot at a righteous slab should it ever travel that route. It's no guarantee however that a TPG grader would not go the other direction and give it a details designation.

Good luck

Well I sure hope I can get a clean grade on it or else I've wasted time and money on a details coin ...
I was told the coin wasn't cleaned by the seller and I've yet to pay for the coin !! Should I cancel the order or does it have a better shot as being graded problem free vs a details grade .. I just don't want to spend 22 bucks plus another 12 to have a AU details coin graded.
Comparing it to several slabbed Barber dimes I own , I thought this coin wouldn't have any problem getting into a graded slab ...

If it was cleaned I wouldn't worry about.

It'll slab problem-free at any of the big 3 grading services.

Before I read other posts before mine, I thought it could have been lightly cleaned, but a long time ago.

I would not let that bother you too much;
I think is is a reasonably nice coin anyway.

AU50, ?lightly cleaned?

Have it slabbed, if that is what you wish to do, but with a potential value of less than $100, question yourself if the slabbing and shipping costs are justified.

Well from the photos it appears to have a decent bit of luster and usually if a lower AU range coin has good traces of luster and isn't covered in hairlines then it will grade ...
@ westernsky
Would you care to elaborate a bit on your comment, as I'm not sure I understand what you meant by that ..,
Also should I go ahead and get the coin and see what anacs thinks ?

OP ...

I do not think the coin has been cleaned inspite of what others have said. If I were you I would not hesitate one minute to pay 22$ for that coin as it is a nice coin for a high grade type set.

I have been collecting coins for a very long time and do not see any signs of cleaning based on what I've seen over the years looking at thousands of coins. It is dirty, as would be expected, for being 100 years old. It is not "blast white", nor does it exhibit tale-tale hairlines that would be characteristic of a wipe. Blast white and hairlines are a huge red flag.

I think that any of the three major grading services (PCGS, NGC or ANACS) would grade the coin problem-free AU 50 to 53.

Others here are entitled to their opinions and I fully respect that. Sometimes people get paranoid and gun shy and lean to the tendency of being overly cautious and resort to calling everything old "cleaned". That's just the way things are in this day and age.

Bottom line is that it is a nice coin for the money in my opinion.

You've got to develop an eye for yourself and an understanding of how the grading services can be. Which, at best, is hot and cold with no guarantees.

I'll speak for myself but I don't think one us is going to tell you with any certainty, "yes" or "no". I think you need to take the plunge, learn from the experience and grow in your numismatic aspirations from there. You'll wind up with what you wind up with on a slab but more importantly, you'll wind up with a keener eye.

We've all had scenarios where we swore what a coin was going to to do in the hands of a TPG and it went the complete opposite way. Would I take my experience back over a few dollars? Not a chance. I learned a lot of valuable lessons over the past several years and they were well worth the price of admission. One thing I can tell you with certainty is that you should do the same.
