I picked up some old proof sets last week. Looking at the penny in the '72 set, I noticed there is no VDB at the bottom. It looks like it tried to stamp something, but ended up as two blobs and a flat spot. I tried for an hour to get a good picture, but this one is the best I could do. Would this be considered an error? Any comments would be appreciated.

It was probably Struck Through Grease.

That would be impossible to be a Struck Through Grease. The VDB is incuse, thus it is raised on the die. So it would have to be that the raised device on the die is worn off.

Yes so it is incuse. Thanks Coop. Sure is a funny place for wear though, considering the rest of the coin.

The polishing to remove a clash is the cause. Not die wear. The incuse devices are higher on the die than the field. Polishing will remove these. on the ATB Quarters (America The Beautiful series) the incuse devices on the reverse are taller on the fields. Here is an example:

Not much polishing would be able to remove the raised devices on the die.

Yep, everything is backwards with incused devices. I think I've got that in my thick head now. Thanks Coop.
