Poll Question
Where do you look for possibly collectible coins? In other words, how do you get your CRH fix?

I presume all CRHers check pocket change, etc., routinely {grin}

If box/bag, do you order or only grab what is on hand at the bank?

Do you have to pay a fee to the bank?

geography?

I do rolls and boxes.

I order boxes of halves, but take boxes of cents and nickels that are on hand. I haven't been getting boxes of dimes, quarters, and dollars, just rolls.

If I order box(es), I get charged 10 cents per roll.

I am in a major metropolitan area in the mid-Atlantic region

"random ONLY (pocket change, sidewalk, vending machine, etc.)"

My wife still accumulates a lot of change. Every now and then I get to sort thought it for keepers.

My setup was to buy $1k bags of customer rolled coin, several each month. The small amount of time it took to search and re-roll made it worthwhile. I was spread out over several banks, adding and subtracting them as time and fees went on.
Lately, I found that I really dislike the banks today because of their greed and fees, so I quit them completely.

I order now 4 boxes of halves a week from a local key bank they have never charged me. I do get rolls if they have them on hand too but most of my finds are boxes....I do occasionally get some boxes of dimes too

I order boxes, have occasionally gotten an odd box the bank had on hand, and customer wrapped rolls as they might have them (usually a few a visit). My local bank locations don't have a counter, otherwise I would delight in a bag. I've considered opening an account at a branch that has them, but I'm content to deal solely with my bank at this time.

I'm not subject to any fees at this time.

I usually take every bag from two different banks. If I run out of bags then I will go to a different bank and get boxes. I dump all mixed coins at different credit union branches. I was at a fairly new branch dumping today. The machine filled up and the assistant manager came out. We probably talked for about 15 minutes. He was very interested in coins. He told me if I ever have a problem to come and see him. Another in my corner. Still Lookin.

I can't get bags. Any time the bank has tried to order them, they get 2 boxes instead of the 1 bag...

My pickup bank is the closest branch to my house (since I'm lazy), but it's a small branch. I've ordered boxes there twice and I don't even think I can get bags. Even loose rolls are sometimes sparse there. Once I wanted quarters and they only had five rolls.

If I could also choose the "random" option, I would; the cash register at work occasionally has something great.

Any of you CRHs want to compare the value of your finds with the time you have spent searching?

That does not always matter. Some just enjoy the hunt.

One could easily ask a deer hunter if they ever compared the value of the venison to the value of all that time spent in a tree stand. Not to mention money invested in the rifle (or bow), ammunition (or arrows), clothing, and travel.

Just saying.

Hobbies are not free and are seldom profitable.

Sure. I search while in front of the TV watching a movie I have seen at least 20 times before cause nothing else is on TV and nothing else to do at that time, so I had free time. While my hands are full of coins, I have no free hand to smoke, so I have cut down on smoking the days I CRH (does increased health count as a value?), and I would check my pocket change anyway, but at the rate of turnover with pocket change, I would not have completed my State Quarter, 165-2004 Roosevelt, 1965-2003 Jefferson, 1965-1998 Washington, etc folders.

I was going to have to get the money to buy groceries with anyway, and I was going to have to spend some for those groceries, so why not get and look coins and my cost per coin in my collection is face value.

Now, value of time spent? I was already doing nothing else anyway, so that value was 0. After buying folders, and other coin supplies I still have a profit, and a LOT of foreign coins I would have likely never even seen otherwise.
