I'm also pretty sure that this is the current king, but younger pictured.

Size? Weight? Metal? These would make it easier to track down.

Several similar coins were made for 1996, so you could have any one of about 5 different commemoratives.

Indeed 1996 to celebrate the golden anniversary of the King's accession. You have the 1 baht and they are fairly commonly found in change out here.

Your pictured coin is a 1 Baht, made of CuNi. The denomination is seen below the arms device on the reverse, as 1 BAHT, in Thai. It is dated 2539, which is 1996. The date is seen on the reverse to the upper right of the arms device. The pictured ruler is Rama the IX. The coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of his reign. It is a circulating commemorative. Nice as it is a one year type! The catalogues list it as having a mintage of 272,512,000. It is 20 mm Ø.
