My daughter and I are new to collecting. She recently bought me a gift, it's a 1968 uncirculated set but it's not in the original packaging, it's in a long plastic case designed to hold all the coins. My daughter was told the set was made up by cherry picking the coins from various 1968 sets. It's not the monetary aspect here that I'm curious about because the set was a gift and that to me is priceless, but I'm wondering if purchasing sets like this is a good idea or not? I see sets in original packaging selling at other local stores for half what she paid for the set I have. Don't get me wrong, the coins in my set are beautiful, but what's to stop me from buying say a 1969 set and removing it from the original package to store in a similar case as my 1968 set? I do like the case for ease of storage and viewing.

Thank you in advance for your responses and helping me learn:)

Sorry, no photo, can't seem to get the image optimizer to work properly on my iPad

I would keep them in the pack, they keep air out to prevent toning, and changes to the coin due to air exposure.

Yes, higher grade examples of the coins individually are worth more the generic set. You need to have a very good eye though to make sure the coins you are getting are actually above average grade. With these sets you have to be careful as they can contain whatever a previous owner decided to put in them. I've seen some nice examples like the '68 you describe but I've also seen some where the coins have gotten damaged as (as @OspreyCoins says above) the new containers are not air tight and probably weren't continuously stored in a cool, dry environment. Others I've seen are circulation coins or a mix of both. As the old saying goes, buy the coin not the holder.

If you haven't already found it, check out http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php as a place to start. And take all price lists (Trends, Charlton, C&C.com etc) with a grain of salt. and enjoy!

Although the original packages do lots of the time get air in them and extremely tone the coins

I understand what you say, as the philofilm packaging in Uncirculated Sets is not very user friendly in terms of viewing a collection. Often the coins are upside down or sideways, and the thin packaging offers no real protection to the coins inside and was never intended to support a lot of handling.

So I'd say go for it and store your collection in whatever format is most appealing to you but buy a quality brand of holder, make sure it's the right size so nothing can rattle around, and upon removal use gloves or coin tweeters, only touching the rims (and no sneezing!)
