I've only been on the forum for a few days, and I've been scrolling through the topics. I was curious on what direction to take with my collection. At this point I'm all over the place, paper and coin,99 percent canadian atleast. I was just curious how other members began there collection.
Thanks Tyler

Collect what you enjoy the most, pennies, dollars, toonies, bills ,ect. but always buy the best grade you can afford.

I first began completing my Silver Dollar collection, then finished it with nickel dollars but always an eye out on 50c back to 1900 as well mainly because the historical component entices me. Those would be my two favourite denominations, then comes nickels, quarters, pennies and dimes in that order. Bank notes, well they just don't have that wonderful silver glimmer of coin but on the other hand the advantage is they're much more compact than coins to safely store. RCM products/replicas don't much appeal to me. Learning to get better at grading, some people choose to focus on specific monarchs/eras, I can see the value in that as well. I think each of us has a unique preference for whatever reason. I agree, collect what appeals to you most (with of course consideration to affordability) because that's what makes ithe hobby and hunt both satisfying and rewarding! What you might do is jot down for yourself the good old "pro and con" list about what appeals to you most if you have several options, the advantages and disadvantages, in order to make your decision. Many people on this forum are an excellent resource, if you need help!

I started collecting when I was a kid, finding commemorative designs in circulation and saving all of my pennies. I mainly stick to circulation finds, but do not have any specific areas of interest. If you are happy with your collection, keep it up while learning more about it. Some prefer (a) specific goal(s) while others, like me, enjoy collecting some of everything.

jandm.com has some beautiful pictures of Canadian coins, be it commemorative or circulation. I wouldn't recommend buying anything from anyone just now, because to me any purchase takes research. Once you've found a direction head into, read about the desired coins, or maybe even post out here to get advices.
Also, I'd keep the purpose at collecting and nowhere close to investing.

Thanks for the replys. I'm really all over the place, I really like paper money, but I really enjoy coins as well. I recently have been a little more picky on quality though......what can I say I'm hooked

Sometimes, it takes a while to find your niche... and even when you do, sometimes that path evolves... Best of luck with the hobby, and to CCF!!

I read your post harmonica, very nice. I think back and I have always had the bug in one way or another. It's kind of funny when you think about it.

I began collecting with commemoratives. Mostly quarters. They're cheap and fun to collect.

Like you I am all over the place.... I love it and hate it all the same. I love that I'm always challenged to learn more... I hate it though as I love coins now I also love having a large quantity of them. I can honestly say it's getting a bit out of hand. But at the same rate my collection is like my own learning portfolio in this hobbie. And for that reason I show it off with pride. I try to be a bit more selective and try to only find higher graded pieces that have nice eye appeal.....key word is try. I also have found a little bit more of a "path" so to speak but that is partially due to some of the fantastic people I have chatted with on here who have taken me under their wing and have shown me the ropes and for that I'm very grateful. My best advice...ask lots of questions...invest in learning and reading material...if you like to collect a certain series or denomination.. Do your research figure out the key dates or varieties and get those first. Like you I also love paper money so you should join the paper money forum as well. But most importantly WELCOME ! And have fun!

I'm into circulation coins/paper... I do find it a little hard to keep up and not even close to completing any one set (with the exception of 1937-Date in pennies only missing a few) but thats half the fun.

Dflogger, welcome and all the best with your collection. It will ebb and flow for a while until you get captivated by some aspect or another. For me, it's Victoria large cents.
