I just received a Claudius (41-54 AD) Sestertius that I won on ebay for a very modest price. The reverse has a legend in a wreath that celebrates Claudius' actions that "saved" the Roman people after ascending to the throne following Caligula's assassination in 41 AD.

It's a worn coin, but when I received it I noticed that the reverse legend, which should read EX S C / O B / CIVES /SERVATOS, reads instead, EX S C / O B / CIVES / SERVAT with the OS missing in the last word.

After doing some online research, since this legend is not mentioned in RIC, Vol. I, I came across a reference to a similar coin in Frank Robinson's auction #95. There it is lot #192. Frank describes it as a coin of "good provincial style" and lists it as "apparently unpublished".

My coin, not in the best condition, is shown first followed by Frank Robinson's coin.

It's nice to stumble into something a bit out of the ordinary.

As someone said before me "When it comes to ancients rarity is not rare" with hand carved dies and so many varieties you can own a coin where only a couple of examples exist for a modest price.

Good to see you picking up some bargain bronzes off the ebay. I've squandered hours looking through all the stuff there, but not bidding/winning much recently. (Still waiting for a handful of stuff lost in the mail!)

Your coin is far superior as the other one has been tooled in a rather inferior manner. Enough specific detail exists though to make me suspect an obverse die match. Claudius has much the same features around the eyes ears nose and mouth to suspect a match.
May even be a Spanish issue. To the best of my knowledge when the provincial mints in Spain discontinued the local types several continued to produce imperial issues. This looks like a good candidate.

I'd thought the same thing about there being an obverse die match. Many of the letters seem to match up by location to the bust and the shape of the letters.

Taking a closer look at the legend I am 99% certain of a match !

If offered for the same money I would not even think twice
Yours is superior in that it has not been 'messed' with.
The vandalism might have even been lessened if the perpetrator had your sestertius
to work from as a reference.
But he didn't ........

Nice coin by the way
I certainly would have pounced on it !
