I just received a Claudius (41-54 AD) Sestertius that I won on
ebay for a very modest price. The reverse has a legend in a wreath that celebrates Claudius' actions that "saved" the Roman people after ascending to the throne following Caligula's assassination in 41 AD.
It's a worn coin, but when I received it I noticed that the reverse legend, which should read EX S C / O B / CIVES /SERVATOS, reads instead, EX S C / O B / CIVES /
SERVAT with the OS missing in the last word.
After doing some online research, since this legend is not mentioned in RIC, Vol. I, I came across a reference to a similar coin in Frank Robinson's auction #95. There it is lot #192. Frank describes it as a coin of "good provincial style" and lists it as "apparently unpublished".
My coin, not in the best condition, is shown first followed by Frank Robinson's coin.
It's nice to stumble into something a bit out of the ordinary.
