Browsing the inventory of a major dealer specializing in Bust Coinage this morning, I came upon this 1814 JR-5 capped dime.
JR-5 is the 'statesofamerica' america, and is not a really rare one (r-3), but in demand since being a Red Book variety.
I have a JR-5 in my collection as well, so it was interesting to compare the two.
The one in the dealers inventory is encapsulated and graded AU55. It is mostly bright, at least judging from the picture. My example has some toning, and I had it as EF45 to EF40.
I will reserve comment for know, but how do you think the two compare?

Many thanks for your comments in advance.

First of all, I like both coins. I think the grades on both of them are about correct. imo, I like the first one better.........don't get me wrong, they are both good, but just to compare I like the brighter coin in this case. That being said, not sure if it's worth upgrading if that's what you were thinking.

Thank you, ed.
Well, what I was getting at is trying to gather opinions on whether, and by how much, is the graded coin better preserved (higher grade) than mine. Just out of curiosity.
In other words, if that is an AU55 (which is PCGS's opinion), then what is the correct grade for mine.
I was not thinking of upgrading my coin. It is the best I can afford for a
JR-5. Dealers are now asking too hefty prices for JR-5s in AU and higher.
This one is about 6K.

Looking at the two, Yours is at least 45. I might even go 50.
It's just a bit under the graded one.

Looks like one grade difference between the two coins. The dealer coin appears to have been dipped to brighten the luster. Yours is a nice original coin.

Thank you, your comments are much appreciated.

I think I agree with your assessment: grade-wise the slabbed coin is better preserved (specially the obverse which is more determinant). It may be strike or wear, don't know, but there is some difference.
I personally grade my coin AU50. It has some nice luster, but you have to view the coin under the right light to see it. It is buried beneath the toning.
Regarding the toning - I personally do not find bright coins of a certain age that appealing. But that is a matter of taste I guess.

Nice coin sir.

I would say if the graded example is an AU55 than, by that specific specimen for comparison, your reliefs, especially the reverse, seem to fit the AU50 range while your mirrors and over surfaces seem to fit an EF45 grade. You've even got a better strike on that (my) right claw than the dealers coin. I also suspect a light dip on the dealers. Your coin, well, its mottled and crusty which, to me, is the bees knees so I really like it. I truly prefer early 19th century silver with mottling and/or toning versus blast white.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree with AU55 for the graded coin and XF45 for yours. Really close to 50
