I love Greek coins with a incuse figure.I have several from South Italy and was happy now to buy an incuse hecte from Mytilene,Lesbos obv:lions head right rev:incuse head of o cow right Bodenstedt 13 var 10 mm , 2.52 gr , very fine mint : Mytilene : 521 - 478 BC . As far as I know , it were only the cities of South Italy who made such coins from about 530 to 475 bc , there are also some hectes from Mytilene and one coin from Massilia (Marseille-France,first century BC).albert

Excellent details on this small coin. It always amazes me how well these coins were made in such an early period in coin history,

Fantastic coin, Albert! Great, fierce lion. We've been seeing some excellent tiny Greek coins lately...in the thread started by Dutch last week, now this.

Congrats! A coin from Lesbos has been on my list for quite a long time, I've got my eye on a particular one that hopefully I will be buying soon... Congratulations! It's a wonderful piece.

So many of the early and tiny Greek silvers are such beautiful works of art.

Nooby question on my part but I can't quite tell. Is the coin posted made of silver or electrum? It has a yellowish tint, and I know many coins from Lesbos are made of electrum.
