The dimes are pretty. What a shame though, this should be a warning thread for proper storage!

Aren't those bills still exchangeable though?

Post the pic of them in the currency forum. They might know. Or pm BadThad or biokemist. That's what I would do
Rest in Peace

The copper cents are so far gone I would suggest a rock tumbler with mild abrasive. (Stop screaming at me. These coins are so badly corroded that any collectible value in there current condition is pretty much zero. Even a 14 D or 09S VDB isn't going to be worth much. Common coins aren't even depositable at the bank in this condition. Some tumbling with fine grit should remove the surface corrosion and make them identifiable. Sure they will be "cleaned" but they won't just be a lump of corroded copper and the worthless commons will be able to be rolled and deposited.)

Far the paper money disturb them as little as possible (Stop moving them around or fooling with them) The Treasury does have a dept for examining and redeeming currency that has been "destroyed" (eaten by animals, burnt in a fire etc.) through the BEP All they can do is redeem the face value but pretty much any collectible value is already gone.

Information on how to have the currency redeemed can be found here

Along the lines of Conder, in this extreme case, I was going to suggest a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for the cents.....might knock a little of the rust off.

Heck of a nice find btw.

Don't try to separate the currency by pulling apart dry. Soak in warm water for about an hour, carefully pull apart and blot with a paper towel. After blotting, put each note between a piece of newspaper keeping them separated. Place a few books on the pile and let dry for 24 hours.

The bills seem cool i'd try and save them.

As for the pennies, they are pretty much done for, which is a shame.

You can also send the US Currency to the BEP - they have people who do recoveries. For each bill that is present over a certain amount, you get full value, and for those less preserved you get the proportionate amount. Call them and ask how. Could be a nice pile of change (pardon the pun)
