I just got some whitman coin folders(Number 2 Lincoln Cent book and a dime book) I wanted to know if they are safe for coins or if they damage rims?

They Three fold ones don't damage the rim. But they can turn the reverse of the BU coins.

The ones with the sliding plastic can scratch the surface if you open them often. The Dansco albums can tone the coins.

So I just stick to 2X2's as they keep the coin the natural color. If you store them in soft flips, these can also turn the coins. If you use flips get the stiffer ones. The softer ones have an issue with PVC.

May be a dumb question COOP, but don't toned coins sell for more to some buyers in any grade?

Not a dumb question, but here is another way to view it...

Would you pay more for the toning?

You are right, some will, but there are many factors involved.
Rest in Peace

I put most of my bu Lincolns in 2x2 cardboard holders. I then put them in a loose leaf book using the plastic pages meant for the 2x2's.
this is safe and inexpensive.

For short term sorting and viewing purposes, a folding folder is okay. I like the Littleton albums with the sliding acetates, they will not tone the coins, and simply use care when opening (sliding the plastic protective covers). The brass holes for the 3 ring binders are very durable, in the Littleton albums! As the expert R. Cooper has said, some folks like toned (tarnished) coins some do not. I view most tarnish as true damage, and I avoid. Do not keep coins in any folding folder for long periods! Especially silver colored (CuNi) coins! Nickels will get a circular golden ring around the outer circumference, this signals that they have been in a Whitman folding folder too long. My world coins are kept in 2x2s, and then in "BCW" cardboard page which holds 12 2x2s per page. These are kept in large common 3 ring binders, in a Jumbo Hefty bag, with desiccants. I have posted images on another coin forum. If anybody is interested I can post them here too.

Well, good idea but using 1 gal. or 2 gal. zip lock bags would be better.

As to Whitman or any brand Folders, remember that coins are just not safe. Placing coins in them usually requires you to push them in place with something. Usually your thumb. This leaves oils and acids on the front of the coins. Now in place, every time you open a Folder you expose those coins to air, moisture, your breath, possible cough, dirt in the air, etc. Next if you want to replace a coin, you push from the back and in many instances, break the paper backing.
The process in making those Folders is to put glue on the paper and lay the cardboard with slots on top of that. If you look at the holes you should see some shine which is the glue, now dried of course. This eventually does effect the coins too.
Folders are cheap and Albums are expensive. All depends on what you want.
