Has anyone ever tried to clean the acetate slides that are in the Whitman and Dansco albums. I'm assuming soap and water would be the best choice but wonder if chemicals in the soap would possibly harm the coins after a while?

Picked up a couple of albums from the 1960's and the slides seem pretty dirty.

I would just get some clear acetate sheets and cut them to appropriate size.

Congratulations on the purchase and good luck with the restoration.

That's good advice if they don't easily come clean with gentle soap and water. I can't imagine cleaning with soap and water, rinsing thoroughly and drying would have any negative impact on them.

But replacement slides are darn near impossible to come by, so jbuck's suggestion is right on.

It will not hurt, but in my experience it will not help. The problem is that they scratch really easily. What may look like a dirty window is actually permanent damage.

I just used plain water and a paper towel. They did scratch a tiny bit but look much better than before.

I have recycled some of the acetate packaging from various purchased products and it has worked well for replacements. Decided to just use water and temporarily clean some till I find more acetate packaging.

I've washed many of them using just dish soaps and water. Once they are rinsed well, nothing should be left on them.
Once I sent a letter to Whitman complaining about nothing in their catalog for replacing those slides. They sent me a pile of them with a note saying we are looking into that.
