Was searching threw a bunch of steelies last night. The first picture is a 1943 with the 4 missing. I figure probably grease filled but it was just the 4 effected. I found another one like this and passed it up. Then this one and wanted to ask baout it.

The next one is a 1943 but there is a doubling on the 4 but nothing on the 9 or 3. Figured MD but again just the number 4.

Hard to tell from the glare on the pics, it could be die wear, too.

First one is a filled die - pretty common.

Second one is die wear - very common.

I agree with coppercoins but I would also add that there is a lot of doubling evident on 1943 cents, in general that has nothing to do with die doubling.

The plating seems to move around a little bit during the strike giving the appearance of doubling. (We see that today on the current plated cents)

In many cases, the 1943 cent series is also "victimized" by what is known as reprocessing. That is when a coin is cleaned and re-plated outside of the mint. The re-plating often causes a doubled look to the details on a coin.

Neither of these is the case on these 2 coins but I wanted to add a little detail as to other reasons for doubling on 1943 dated cents.

coppercoins, as always hits the nail right on the head. Nothing out of the ordinary on these coins.

Thanks everyone, I was pretty sure the first was grease but it was confined to just the 4 and thats a really small area.

Didn't think of die wear on the doubled 4. Could not think of how it would spread the 4 out that far and not the other 3 numbers.

I have several 43's I want to suspect as errors; however, I am aware that some of the missing letters or parts of dates may have simply deteriorated off the steel coin.
